Oscar statuette awarded to Charles Coburn as “Best Supporting Actor” for the 1943 film, “The More the Merrier.” The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented this statue to Coburn at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on 2 March 1944, the first year that the Best Supporting Actor awards were presented as statues rather than tablets. Coburn co-starred with Jean Arthur and Joel McCrea in this romantic comedy revolving around the WWII housing shortage. The “New York Times” called Coburn, “the comical crux of the film.” An engraved plaque on the statuette pedestal reads, “Presented to Charles Coburn / In Recognition of His Performance in / ‘The More the Merrier’ / 1943″. The figure and film reel, composed of gold-plated britannium measuring 10″ tall, top the pedestal, bringing the total height to 12″. The pedestal’s diameter measures 5.25”. The award weighs 7 pounds. Moderate rubbing and tarnishing to statuette. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $170,459.
