We sold a signed and bound collection of Anne Sexton’s “raw, unworked poems” for $2,813. Please see details below:

Extraordinary Bound Volume of ”raw, unworked poems” by Anne Sexton in 1973 — With Two Letters Signed to Critic Walter Kerr, Whom She Sent Them to, One Day After She Finished the Drafts

Over 100 pages of poetry by the Pulitzer Prize winning author Anne Sexton, the first drafts of ”The Awful Rowing Toward God” and ”The Death Notebooks”, one day after she completed these ”raw, unworked poems”. Poems are accompanied by two typed letters signed, the first written to critic Walter Kerr, to whom she gave these poems because she had read that Kerr and his wife read poetry aloud, and that she was also touched by his ”kind, gracious, and insightful review of ‘Mercy Street’ years earlier. Two page letter is written upon Sexton’s personal letterhead, dated 31 January 1973 as is the other single page letter, also signed ”Anne Sexton”, where she writes one day after their completion, ”These poems were started January 10, 1973, finished January 30, 1973…they are raw, unworked poems, all first drafts, written in a frenzy of despair and hope…I fly like an eagle but with the wings of a wren…” The draft of the ”The Death Notebooks” features Sexton’s handwritten inscription, ”For Walter Kerr”, and includes an original poem entitled ”Jesus Walking”. These first drafts, all pages being photostatic copies, differ from the published works, with many additional verses present in these volumes. Over 120 pages in total, bound in custom quarter-leather boards with marbled endpapers, reading ”Anne Sexton / 1973” on spine. Measures 8.75” 11.25”. Some wear to boards, very good condition. Sold for $2,813.

Sylvia Plath’s Pulitzer Prize in Poetry

The Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, awarded posthumously to literary icon Sylvia Plath for ”The Collected Poems” in 1982.  The only notable literary award won by Plath. Pulitzer Prizes infrequently come to auction, with this one even more special for its importance to 20th century literature.  The Poetry Jury Report from 1982 commented on its importance: ”The appearance of ”Collected Poems” of Sylvia Plath is an extraordinary literary event. Plath won no major prizes in her lifetime, and most of her work has been posthumously published…”

Pulitzer Prize certificate comes as presented to Ted Hughes who edited the collection, and then passed down to his and Sylvia’s daughter Frieda Hughes. Certificate is signed by the Pulitzer President Michael Sovern.  It is housed in the blue morocco leather folder, with silk moire endpapers and blind-stamped Pulitzer seal to cover, and gilt embellishments. Certificate is stamped with gold Pulitzer seal, and dated 12 April 1982, reading in part. ”…Sylvia Plath / has been awarded / The Pulitzer Prize in Poetry / for / ‘The Collected Poems’…” Certificate measures 10” x 8” and folder measures 10.5” x 8.5”. Light shelf wear to folder, otherwise near fine condition.

Pulitzer Prize is accompanied by two telegrams from Sovern to Ted Hughes, both dated 13 April 1982.  Also included is a typed letter signed by Sovern on Columbia University letterhead, dated 30 April 1982, to Ted Hughes that accompanied presentation of the Prize. Sold for $12,500
