John Steinbeck 1938 Autograph Letter Signed

Autograph letter signed from Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winning author John Steinbeck. Written in ink on verso of a postcard, signed letter is addressed to fellow writer and political activist Selden Rodman. Steinbeck writes just after completing the manuscript of “The Grapes of Wrath,” and offers a glimpse into the enormous fatigue that followed this literary labor of love: “…Look – I’m just finishing an 800-page book. I’m pooped. Never could write for anything, and now I’m thoroughly tired…Worked right through a case of flu and now am so weary and dispirited that I never want to write anything again – particularly an article…Three years of work on this book and it is all I have. And all I’m likely to have for some time. I’m seriously tempted to take a long cruise somewhere and rest completely…Wish I felt well enough to write more…” Steinbeck did go on to write other novels, but “The Grapes of Wrath” was unquestionably his greatest. As reviewer Charles Poore wrote in the New York Times after Steinbeck’s 1968 death, “John Steinbeck’s first great book was his last great book. But Good Lord, what a book…” Postcard measures 3.25″ x 5.25″. Soiling and chipping to top edge, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $1,796.
