Sell Your Andre Breton Autograph
Andre Breton was a French writer and poet. He is known best as the co-founder, leader, principal theorist and chief apologist of Surrealism. His writings include the first Surrealist Manifesto of 1924, in which he defined surrealism as “pure psychic automatism”.
Here is an item we sold in the past at Nate D. Sanders Auctions:
Andre Breton autograph letter signed to the director of the socialist periodical ”Argus de la Presse”. Dated 2 October (November based on content) 1924 on ”The Surrealist Revolution / Bureau of Surrealist Research” letterhead, Breton complains about cuts to the paper, resulting in poor service. French letter translates in part, ”…cuts continue to be made in spite of common sense. While one sends me at every moment notes of newspapers concerning a Mr. Breton, politician, a Mr. Le Breton, professor, and even Bretons dead in the war or having answered inquiries in 1852, I make sure by consulting the cuts that you address to the Bureau of research surrealists 15 rue de Grenelle that I receive hardly any more of what can interest me…” He then notes articles published in October 1924 in ”Le Thyrse”, ”…You understand like me that this state of affairs can not last I am your customer long enough for you to fix it…Andre Breton”. Two page letter on one sheet measures 8.25” x 10.5”. Faint folds, file holes to left side and light toning, overall in very good plus condition. Sold for $1,125.

Poet Walt Whitman signed photograph of himself from the late 19th century, with a distinctive, large signature by Whitman below his image in bright blue. Photo by ”F. GuteKunst Philadelphia” measures 6.25” x 8.5”, with image itself measuring 3.75” x 5.75”. Some foxing and dampstaining to lower edge, able to be framed out. Overall in good to very good condition. With University Archives COA. Sold for $3,125.
Poet Stephane Mallarme Autograph Letter Signed — Mallarme Writes to Fellow Poet Leon Dierx
Influential poet Stephane Mallarme autograph letter signed, elegantly written in French to fellow poet Leon Dierx. Dated ”Monday” in 1890, Mallarme laments an illness of conjunctivitis suffered by his friend, and speaks of a ”Poland”, who is also ill and can’t travel to Paris. Letter on front and verso of a card measures 4.5” x 3.5”. Uniform toning, else near fine. Sold for $1,563.
