Al Capp was an American cartoonist and humorist who is best remembered for creating and illustrating the comic strip Li’l Abner. The strip ran for 43 years between 1934 and 1977. Capp also created and wrote the comic strips Abbie an’ Slats and Long Sam.

Al Capp original art for a Sunday comic strip of L’il Abner
Al Capp original art for a Sunday comic strip of L’il Abner. Dated 6/3, with the copyright slug reading United Features Syndicate, 1939. Pen and ink with Chinese white on illustration board, four strips conjoined (nine panels in all), 22 x 19 1/2 inches (55 x 48 cm). Masking tape in the outer margins, some expected minor soiling, marginal printing notations, in all in excellent shape. Framed. Wolf Girl comes to visit the Yokums, forswearing her former ways; and to test her reform, the family leaves her with Salome, the “youngest Yokum,” the tastiest pig in the world, with predictable results. Sold for $2,600.
Al Capp Ink Portrait of His Voluptuous ”Li’l Abner” Heroine Daisy Mae — 11.5” x 14.5”

Al Capp hand drawn ”Li’l Abner” comic strip featuring Shmoos. 2-panel strip from 9 September 1948 depicts Abner dining on a plate of the cooked Shmoo meat Mammy is dishing out in the kitchen, surrounded by living Shmoos, while shopkeeper Soft-Hearted John storms in ranting about his business being down since the townspeople are getting everything they need from Shmoos, as explicated by Abner, ”Shmoos does ev’rything! They gives milk, aigs, meat, an’ th’ eyes makes fine suspender buttons!…Nobody needs money no more!” Capp uses his Shmoo creatures as an allegory for animals. Measures 22.5” x 7”. Toning and white out. Near fine. Sold for $1,875.
Oversized 15” x 11” ”Li’l Abner” sketch by Al Capp. Drawing in ink and pencil depicts Daisy Mae and Slobberlips. With pencil notations along bottom, possibly in Capp’s hand. Minor foxing and toning, very good. Sold for $1,250.
