Satchel Paige is recognized for being the oldest baseball player to debut in the major league as he was signed to the Cleveland Indians for one season at age 42 in 1948. Paige initially pitched for the Negro leagues and primary threw fastballs in the 1930s. A shoulder injury in 1939 forced Paige to experiment with different pitching styles and arm angling. By the 1950s Paige had amassed several pitching techniques into his repertoire including knuckleballs and screwballs. Paige was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971.

Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig autograph photograph. 5″ x 7″ black and white image depicts the two Yankee greats standing side by side on the baseball field wearing their pinstripe pants. Inscribed by Ruth in brown ink at the upper left, “For Walter from, ‘Babe’ Ruth” beside which Gehrig signs in black ink, “& Lou Gehrig”. Small .25″ tear (with no emulsion loss) at top, not affecting either signature, else fine. A difficult to acquire pairing of legendary signatures on a single photograph.  A Babe Ruth signature with the quotation marks around “Babe” typifies his pre-1928 autograph and will sell at a higher value as well.  Sold for $19,036.

Exceptionally large 8.5/10 fountain pen signature upon an Official National League baseball with printed signature of NL President John Heydler, dating Ruth’s signature to 1934 or earlier. Clear, bold signature autograph with minimal marks on a very clean, bright ball. With COA from PSA/DNA, and auction COA from JSA attesting that the Babe Ruth signed baseball is authentic. Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige single signed official American Association baseball. Paige, who played in the Negro leagues before becoming the oldest rookie in Major League Baseball at age 42, was known for his powerful fastballs. He signs and underlines, “Satchel Paige” in blue ink below the Wilson trademark. The red-stitched baseball is stamped with the signature of American Association President Joe Ryan.
