Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune is the world’s best selling science fiction book and has also won a Hugo Award and Nebula Award for Best Novel. It has sold nearly 20 million copies and has been translated into several languages. Dune was adapted into a 1984 film directed by David Lynch and a television miniseries directed by John Harrison.

First Edition, First Printing of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” — With Typed Letter Signed by Herbert Regarding “Dune” Sequels

First edition, first printing of the science fiction classic “Dune” by Frank Herbert, in its original first printing dust jacket with $5.95 price intact. Philadelphia: Chilton Books, 1965. Lot includes a letter signed by Herbert, dated 24 June 1970 while he worked at the “Seattle Post Intelligencer”, reading in part, “…there will be at least one more book in the ‘Dune’ series…I prefer not to discuss the content of published works, as I feel these should stand by themselves and not need additional interpretations from me…” Book is bound in publisher’s light blue cloth with white lettering to spine. Measures 6.25″ x 9.25″. Lightly rubbed cloth with softly bumped corners. Owner’s name and address to front free endpaper and name only to upper margin of page 100. Very good condition. First printing jacket has publisher’s imprint in four lines at the bottom of the rear flap; jacket is restored with areas of filling and color-matching. Offsetting to edges and small stains along bottom edge of rear panel. Overall a very good copy of this science fiction classic. Sold for $2,910.

Margaret Mitchell Signed First Edition of ”Gone With The Wind”

Margaret Mitchell signed first edition of her Pulitzer prize-winning novel ”Gone With the Wind”, which inspired the Academy award-winning film of the same name. Elegantly signed ”Margaret Mitchell” on the front free endpaper of this first edition, 16th printing, published in October 1936. In its original dustjacket, housing grey cloth boards. Measures 6” x 9”. Minor shelf wear and toning. Very good. Sold for $4,813.

Ernest Hemingway First Limited Edition of ”A Farewell to Arms” — Signed by Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway signed limited first edition of his post-WWI classic, ”A Farewell to Arms”. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1929. Published 27 September 1929 in a limited edition of 510 numbered copies, this being number 206, signed boldly ”Ernest Hemingway” in black fountain pen. Measures 6.25” x 9.5”. Book is in very good condition with some wear and discoloration to boards. Signature page has the prior owner’s name previously erased but still faintly visible underneath Hemingway’s name, with a small closed tear. Housed in a custom one-quarter leather clamshell box. Sold for $4,375.

Ayn Rand Signed Limited Edition of ”Atlas Shrugged” — The Epic Novel That Inspired a Philosophical Movement

Signed limited edition of Ayn Rand’s ”Atlas Shrugged.” Random House: New York: 1957. Rand signs the tenth anniversary edition number 1,888 of 2,000 upon the limitation page, ”Ayn Rand”. Considered a definitive novel of the 20th century, ”Atlas Shrugged” is Rand’s skillful fictional vehicle for her philosophy of individualism. She states in the novel’s appendix, ”My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.” Book measures 6” x 8.75” in original blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and blue top edges. Housed in the original 6.5” x 9” cardboard slipcase. Fine condition. Sold for $2,129.
