Albumen photo from Alexander Gardner’s 1866 “Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War,” No. 84, entitled “View of the Interior of Fort Steadman,” a battle-weary piece of land that received daily assaults during the Siege of Petersburg. With accompanying text from the book noting, “The trees bear many marks of the compliments paid by the enemy during the almost daily severe artillery duels…” 9″ x 7″ photograph is affixed to a 16.5″ x 12.5″ book page; text is on separate page. Small tear and crease to text page, else near fine. Sold for $1,260.

Beautiful Alex Gardner albumen photo from Edwin D. Judd’s “Views of the War,” No. 20, September 1862, entitled “Burnside Bridge, Across Antietam Creek, Maryland.” With accompanying text from the book narrating the 1862 Civil War battle that took place on the banks of the creek, pointing out the scars still visible on the stone wall at water’s edge. 9″ x 7″ photograph is affixed to the 17″ x 12.5″ book page; text is on separate page. Near fine. Sold for $940.

Abraham Lincoln Signed CDV as President — John Hay Certifies Signature as Authentic on Verso

Exceptionally rare Abraham Lincoln signed carte-de-visite photograph, taken by Alexander Gardner in 1861 and signed as President. Signed ”A. Lincoln” below the seated portrait of Lincoln. John Hay, Lincoln’s private secretary, authenticates the signature upon the verso by writing, ”I certify that the President’s signature is genuine / John Hay”. With ”Brady’s National Portrait Gallery” backstamp. Measures 2.5” x 3.75”. Very good with some foxing and wear, but with a strong signature by Lincoln. With provenance from Profiles in History and with a COA from Charles Hamilton. Sold for $49,913.

George A. Custer Rare Signed CDV Photo With Brady Backstamp — “Truly Yours / G.A. Custer”

Very rare George A. Custer signed CDV photo as Brigadier General, with the backstamp of Mathew Brady who took the photo on 8 October 1863 (K-20 in the catalog of Custer photos). Custer signs under his image, “Truly Yours / G.A. Custer”. Accompanied by a CDV of Custer’s wife, Elizabeth Bacon Custer, with backstamp of photographer W.H. Bowlsby, Monroe, Michigan. CDVs originate from the family of Jessica Wood Cust, neighbors of the Custers in Monroe. Notation on verso of Mrs. Custer’s photo indicates that General Custer taught a member of the Cust family how to ride horseback. CDVs each measure 2.375″ x 4″. Writing on versos and minute wear, overall in very good plus condition with a prominent signature by Custer. With provenance from Cowan’s Auctions, where the set sold for $23,000 in 2005. Sold for $8,400.

John F. Kennedy & Jackie Kennedy Signed Photo Measuring 9″ x 13.25″ — An Alfred Eisenstaedt Photo Signed by the Photographer Too

Evocative photograph signed by John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy as they campaigned for the Presidency in 1960. Silver gelatin photograph is also signed at lower right by Alfred Eisenstaedt, who took the photo and writes about it on the verso, “This…shows John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy on a campaign trip to New York City in September 1960, after he was chosen by the Democratic Convention to be their standard bearer. Please put it in your collection, I think it is very valuable. Eisenstaedt”. Jacqueline Kennedy inscribes the front of the photo to “Eisie”, the nickname used by Eisenstaedt’s friends and family, “with gratitude” after which the future President and First Lady sign their names, “John Kennedy” and “Jacqueline Kennedy”. With Eisenstaedt’s stamp on verso, “PHOTO BY ALFRED EISENSTAEDT” as well as a stamp by Life magazine. Photo measures 9″ x 13.25″. Small crease to lower right, overall in very good to near fine condition. From Alfred Eisenstaedt’s estate and with University Archives COA for both signatures. Sold for $10,000.

Silver Gelatin Signed 11″ x 14″ Alfred Eisenstaedt Photo of John F. Kennedy & Daughter Caroline — Taken During the Summer of 1960 When JFK Campaigned for President

Alfred Eisenstaedt signed 11″ x 14″ silver gelatin photograph of John F. Kennedy with his daughter Caroline. According to Eisenstaedt’s handwritten notation on the verso, the photo was taken in Hyannisport in August 1960 after JFK’s nomination for President. Signed “Eisenstaedt” on the photographic border. With Eisenstaedt’s stamp on verso, “PHOTO BY ALFRED EISENSTAEDT”. Near fine condition. From Alfred Eisenstaedt’s estate. Sold for $3,704.94.

Two Original Photographs From 1891, After the Wounded Knee Massacre — One Photograph Shows Chiefs Two Strike, Crow Dog & High Hawk, ”Leaders of the Hostile Indians…During the late Sioux War”

Two original albumen prints from 1891, taken by Northwestern Photo Co. of Chadron, Nebraska, whose outfit is well known for documenting the aftermath of the Wounded Knee massacre. One of the photos numbered 89, ascribed to photographer C.C. Pierce, showing Chiefs Two Strike, Crow Dog and High Hawk, identified as ”Leaders of the Hostile Indians at Pine Ridge Agency S.D. During the late Sioux War”. With copyright in the negative of ”NW Photo Co. / Chadron Neb.” Bold and well contrasted photo measures 7” x 4.25” on a 10” x 7” album mat, the verso of which contains another 7” x 4.25” photo, one of the last taken by Clarence Moreledge on July 4, 1891, numbered 1589, with his signature in the negative at lower right. Photograph published in ”Eyewitness at Wounded Knee” is identified as ”After the Barbecue” at the Pine Ridge Agency. Some buckling and staining to mat. Photos remain very good to near fine. Sold for $1,250.
