Sell Your Milford Zornes Art

Here is a piece of Milford Zornes art we have sold:

Milford Zornes 1951 “Oak Tree”

“Oak Tree,” 1951 painting by California artist Milford Zornes. Mixed media painting using watercolor, pastel and charcoal. Signed and dated to lower left, “Zornes 51.” An Oklahoma native who moved west during the Dust Bowl years, Zornes became part of the resurgence of water color painting in California. After graduating from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, he studied the medium with Millard Sheets. Later, along with Sheets and Phil Dike, Zornes founded the California Watercolor Society, a group that explored the blossoming urban atmospheres of California as well as the state’s varied desert, mountain and coastal landscapes. The artists’ innovations in scope and vocabulary gave the medium of watercolor renewed currency with art collectors and institutions in the 1920s and 30s. Zornes became one of the most successful of the group’s members, and the most visible envoy of the growing watercolor movement. In 1933, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. sponsored a one-man show of his work, which led to President Franklin D. Roosevelt selecting a painting for display in the White House. Zornes’ paintings are characterized by their broad brush strokes and often grand scale. This piece, a close up view of a gnarled California oak tree, displays Zornes’ talent with mixed media as well as his effective use of unpainted white space to set off the painting’s central image. Measures 29.5″ x 21″; framed, 39″ x 31.5″. The painting has been mounted on matting and framed. Canvas shows some minor edgewear. Frame is sans glass. A beautiful piece from this notable California artist. Excellent condition. Sold for $1,679.

Marjorie Reed Western Landscape

Marjorie Reed original landscape painting. Oil on canvas, signed to lower right. Measures 24″ x 20″; 29″ x 25″ framed. Marjorie Reed was born in 1915, the daughter of artist Walter Reed, an illustrator for Walt Disney. She was raised in Los Angeles, but from a young age yearned for the life of the country. After attending the Chouinart Art School and the Art Center school in Los Angeles, she found her most significant tutelage with renowned California landscape artist Jack Wilkinson Smith. She moved dozens of times throughout her adult life, living primarily in Arizona and Southern California. Her paintings often feature stagecoaches, cowboys, horses and other iconography of the west. Horses were a particular passion of Reed’s, an interest she traced to her girlhood dream of living on a ranch. In this painting, she depicts a placid scene of a Native American couple on a pack mule in the midst of a sprawling desert. Light general soiling to canvas. Excellent condition. Sold for $3,267.
