Fantastic Joseph Heller Signed Letter on “Catch-22,” WWII and His Literary Influences — “…How did I feel about the war when I was in it? Much differently than Yossarian felt and much differently than I felt when I wrote the novel…”
Important letter by Joseph Heller, contextualizing one of the best novels of the 20th century nearly 15 years after its publication. In this letter to Professor James Nagel of Northeastern University, Heller intimately reminisces about writing “Catch-22,” the novels that influenced his craft, and his military experience as a bombardier (like Catch-22’s protagonist John Yossarian) in WWII. Letter on three separate pages measures 7.25″ x 10.25″. Near fine condition. Sold for $4,884.
Joseph Heller Explaining “Catch-22” — “…All anachronisms of plot were unintenional [sic]…Anachronisms of history, however, were deliberate…to fuse that period of the war…with the time period in which the novel was written…several of them [are] such subtle plays upon events in the newspapers that I suppose all allusive value has by now been lost…”
Fascinating and revealing letter by Joseph Heller on the process of writing “Catch-22,” events from WWII that influenced “Catch-22″ and details of his childhood. 4 April 1974 letter has some hand-corrections to the text made by Heller. Measures 7.25″ x 10.25” on front sides only, and accompanied by original mailing envelope. Near fine condition. Sold for $2,358.
Excellent letter by author Joseph Heller, who here dissects his second novel, the non-linear ”Something Happened,” a complicated book that ends with the reader learning that many of the memories of its protagonist, Bob Slocum, are unreliable. Letter has numerous hand-annotations by Heller. On three separate pages of Heller’s letterhead, each measuring 7.25” x 10.25”. Also with original envelope, all in near fine condition. Sold for $1,172.
Excellent Joseph Heller typed letter signed, regarding a collection of critical essays on ”Catch-22” compiled by James Nagel, to whom this letter is written. Dated 23 March 1974, 7.25” x 10.25” letter is in near fine condition, and includes Heller’s personal transmittal envelope. Sold for $625.
