Louis won the first event of the Olympic Games, which was the marathon, and was acclaimed a national hero due to the event’s connection with the Ancient Greek Olympics. For his achievement he received numerous gifts including jewelry and a carriage to transport water from the King. Louis became a farmer and police officer following his Olympic victory.

Olympian Spyridon “Spyros” Louis signed slip. The water-carrier and marathon runner became the winner of the first event of the first Olympiad of the modern era. The Summer Games were held on 6 April 1896, in Athens, Greece, Spyros’ home country and birthplace of the Olympics of antiquity. The marathon was the first event, its finish line located at Panathinaiko Stadium. Spyros became a national hero. In addition to his signature, he also inscribes a greeting in Greek and dates it 1896. Slip measures 3.75″ x 1.5″. Toning and remnants from mounting and pencil notations to verso, else near fine. Sold for $990.
