Mark Twain Check Signed as Samuel Clemens

Mark Twain check signed, ”Samuel L. Clemens” in bold black ink. First National Bank of Hartford, CT check is made out in Clemens’ hand, dated 12 June 1875 in the amount of $62.50 to a recipient named Barnes. Measures 7.75” x 2.75”. Trimming to top edge and initials in pencil to upper left, else near fine. Sold for $1,250.

Mark Twain personal check signed in his given name, “Saml L. Clemens”. First National Bank of Hartford check is dated 2 July 1875 and made out entirely in Clemens’ hand to “Caswell Bros” in the amount of $78.69. Endorsed on verso by Caswell. Partially printed check on pale lavender paper measures 7.75″ x 3″. Trimming to bottom edge evident on the left and some light staining to lower right, else near fine. Sold for $939.

Rare Mark Twain 1875 Personal Check Signed “Samuel L. Clemens” — A Year Later He Would Publish “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”

Literary giant Mark Twain personal check signed “Samuel L. Clemens” clearly in black ink. Around the time Clemens signs this check, he was completing his most famous work, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, published in 1876. Dated and filled out in Clemens’ hand, the First National Bank of Hartford, Connecticut check is numbered “101”, dated “Apl. 30 1875” and made out to “Bearer” for the sum of $30. With two “Paid” stamps in red and blue ink to front of check and an additional stamp to verso. Measures 7.5″ x 3″. Slightly uneven bottom edge and a few tiny pinholes, else near fine. Sold for $865.
