We at Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold a collection of letters and photos from a U.S. soldier who was involved in World War II’s Operation Tidal Wave for $1,946. Please see details below:

Liberator B24 Ploesti Raid Photo Album — Bombadier From the Snow White Group — Letters, Photos and Memorabilia — 1942-43

Unique family treasure trove of an Army Air Force bombardier flying on Liberator plane 343 Bomb Sq.; 98 Bomb Group known as the Snow White Group, circa 1942-43. Photo album contains 29 group photos, some are identified. Also included are twelve nose art photos of the Snow White Group, two uniform patches and a lock of the soldier’s hair. Seventy-five letters, v-mail and postcards to mother and wife including those returned after he was declared MIA. Notebook of letters from the war department, commanders and the Red Cross, re: son’s injuries , MIA and KIA. Also correspondence with other families of the group that were KIA. Four propaganda fliers dropped over Italy, Greece, Africa. Top turret gunner, went missing on raid over Ploesti oil fields in Romania and received the Distinguished Flying Cross 8-1-43. There is a heart rending letter from the lone survivor of the plane giving a first person account of plane being hit and subsequent events both inside and out. Group remains were finally found and he was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. Soldier’s remains and those of his group were buried at Arlington Cemetery April 1949. His wife was pregnant when he left and a son was born after he was killed. Loose family photos; mother’s ledger and other miscellaneous family papers are also present beginning when soldier was in grade school. Photo album intact; pages still have rice tissue paper separators; no loose pages. All in excellent condition w/minimal edge tears. Sold for $1,946.
