Matthew C. Perry was a U.S. Navy Commodore who directed ships during many wars of the 1800s and was the son of Navy Captain Christopher Raymond Perry. Matthew C. Perry is remembered for negotiating a treaty between the U.S. and Japan that allowed the U.S. two Japanese sea ports where commercial trading between the U.S. and Japan could be facilitated. Prior to this treaty, Japan had been relatively closed off from the Western world since the 1600s. Perry also supported modernizing the navy as well as the education of naval officers by helping to start an apprenticeship program for the U.S. Naval Academy.

Matthew C. Perry autograph letter signed. Datelined Sharon Springs, 17 July 1856, Perry’s letter to Miss Campbell reads in part: “…I had intended to have accompanied the book back which you were so obliging as to loan me, with a note expressing my thanks – but as Miss Benton unexpectedly returned it I avail myself of the earliest moment to say to you how much I have been pleased…M.C. Perry”. Single-page letter measures 5″ x 8″. Creasing, else near fine. Sold for $760.
