Lumen Martin Winter Art
Lumen Martin Winter was an American artist known for his proficiency in a wide range of mediums including watercolor, marble, wood, mosaic and oil paint. Some of his most well-known pieces include public murals and lithographs for the Apollo XIII mission. Today the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages houses the largest collection of Winter’s work.
We at Nate D. Sanders Auctions have the following Lumen Martin Winter art in our inventory:
Stunning oil on canvas of ”Steeds of Apollo” by Lumen Martin Winter, the Apollo XIII mission insignia designer whose artwork here of the galloping horses, racing towards the skies, is the only such depiction in painting apart from the original 1969 mural. This painting, signed and dated 1981 by Lumen Winter at lower right, was used for the limited edition lithographs signed by the Apollo XIII astronauts in 1981. Artwork remains in near fine condition, beautifully showcasing the galloping horses against a background of teal sky, opening to reveal the heavens.
Large oil on canvas measures 35.75” x 23”, framed to 40” x 28”. Painting is accompanied by a 9” x 7.25” photo of Winter with Jack Swigert, James Lovell and Fred Haise in 1970 at the St. Regis hotel, in front of the mural that inspired the mission insignia, and holding a mock-up of the Apollo XIII medallion, with the mission insignia based on Winter’s art. The 20′ x 8′ ”Steeds of Apollo” mural now hangs at the Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in Chicago, along with the quote by Lovell, ”I have seen the Earth as it truly is…A grand oasis in the vastness of space.” Painting is also accompanied by a notarized LOA by Thomas V. Nowak, the widower of Catherine Winter Nowak, Lumen Winter’s daughter. Sold for $24,000.
