John Steinbeck Signed First Edition of “The Grapes of Wrath” — Inscribed to Daughter of Journalist & Social Commentator Heywood Broun
First edition, 11th printing of the “The Grapes of Wrath” signed by its author, John Steinbeck. Viking Press: New York: 1940. Signed with tongue-in-cheek inscription referring to journalist Heywood Broun: “For Pat Broun / Why I knew her fadder / John Steinbeck / and I like her” above an image of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” on the front free endpaper. The poignant story of one family’s emigration from dustbowl Oklahoma to California is an epic American novel, contributing to Steinbeck’s Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. 5.25″ x 7.75″ clothbound book with original dustjacket showing moderate paper loss at spine is in very good condition. Sold for $1,951.

”The Grapes of Wrath” signed by its author, John Steinbeck. Viking Press: New York: 1963. Signed by the author the year after he received the Nobel Prize, and a few years before his death: ”For M. Klemaszewski from John Steinbeck 11/20/63” on the half-title page. A fine example of Steinbeck’s epic American novel, which largely contributed to his winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. 5” x 7.75” book runs 619pp. Partial separation of front hinge, limited soiling to boards and light wear on both joints. Very good condition. Sold for $1,562.
John Steinbeck Signed ”The Short Novels of John Steinbeck” — 1st Printing in Original Dustjacket
John Steinbeck signed first edition, first printing of ”The Short Novels of John Steinbeck,” Viking: New York: 1953. The Nobel Prize-winning author inscribes the front free endpaper: ”For Hank Pearson / with best wishes / John Steinbeck / New York 1953”. This first edition in its original dustjacket is a compilation of six of his moving stories: ”Tortilla Flat,” ”The Red Pony,” ”Of Mice and Men,” ”The Moon is Down,” ”Cannery Row” and ”The Pearl.” Bound in brick red cloth boards with black lettering. Top edge yellow. Original grey and orange unclipped dustjacket is near fine. Book has small areas of discoloration on signature page and rear free endpaper, else fine. Sold for $1,250.
