Jim Thorpe “Redman” Signed Rare Book
Rare Olympic champion Jim Thorpe signed copy of “Fabulous Redman: The Carlisle Indians and Their Famous Football Teams.” Also signed by book’s author, John Steckbeck of Dickinson College. Harrisburg: J. Horace McFarlane Company: 1951. Hardcover. Rare book signed on the ffep by Steckbeck in grey ink, “To Mr. Walter Siegrist / Best Wishes / John S. Steckbeck,” to which Thorpe adds in bold, black ink, “Me Too Jim Thorpe.” Jacobus Franciscus “Jim” Thorpe (also known as Wa-Tho-Huk by the Sac and Fox Nation) is universally considered one of the most versatile athletes in modern sports. He won Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon, starred in college and professional football, played Major League Baseball and was also an accomplished basketball player. He subsequently lost his Olympic titles when it was found he had played two seasons of minor league baseball prior to competing in the games. In 1983, 30 years after his death, Thorpe’s medals were restored. Book, measuring 6.25″ x 9.25″, chronicles the stories of Native American football teams during the sport’s 1907-13 heyday. Mild wear to black cloth boards, light toning and foxing, otherwise in near fine condition. Scarce. Sold for $1,700.

Slip signed by a diverse assortment of some of the most extraordinary sports figures of the 20th century. Baseball Hall of Famer “Ted Williams” signs, representing America’s so-called national pastime. Basketball Hall of Famer and MVP of the first All-Star game Easy Ed signs “Ed Macauley”, and fellow hoop star “Bob Dunham” of the Celtics adds his autograph. Heavyweight boxing champion “Jack Sharkey” also signs. Finally, representing football, baseball, basketball, wrestling, running, throwing, jumping, and more, is the signature of “Jim Thorpe”. The Olympic gold medalist in such events as the decathlon and pentathlon is widely considered the best all-around athlete of the century. All signatures are in blue ink on a Columbia Built Bicycles advertisement. Signed face of folded ad measures 9.5″ x 7.5″. Unfolds to an overall size of 9.5″ x 15″. Toning, else near fine.
