He led the Regina Rangers and Ottawa Commandos to the Allan Cup title (national senior men’s ice hockey championship of Canada) in 1941 and 1943, respectively. He was donned “Sugar Jim” at a young age for an affinity for sweet and the nickname stuck throughout his life. He joined the New York Rangers in 1941, then spent two years in the service, returning to New York in 1945 splitting time with Chuck Rayner for the next three seasons. In 1948, Jim was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks for future Hall of Famer, Emile Francis, and played every game in net for the Hawks during the 1948-49 season, again leading the NHL in minutes played. He played two seasons in the United States Hockey League until he was traded to the Boston Bruins in 1950. Jim Henry played four seasons in Boston (1951-1955), leading the NHL in minutes three more times. He helped lead the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1952-53 before falling to the Montreal Canadiens in five games. He was named to the 1952 NHL All-Star Second Team and played in that year’s NHL All-Star Game. Sugar Jim Henry finished his career with a record of 161-173-70 with a 2.87 goals against average and 28 shutouts in 406 regular season games. In the playoffs, he compiled an 11-18 record with a 2.79 GAA and two shutouts. He also played extensively in the American Hockey League collecting 71 wins and 68 losses in 154 games while posting a 3.46 GAA and seven shutouts. 1953 Parkhurst — Jim Henry #86 — PSA 9 — Population 1 of 2.
