As one of the earliest independent coin grading services it was established in 1987 and became the official grading service of the American Numismatic Association in 1995. The NGC’s grading system utilizes the Sheldon scale ranging from 1 to 70, where a coin with a score of 70 in theory is worth 70 times more than one graded a 1. A coin is view by at least two graders during their grading process. To minimize conflict of interest the NGC’s employees are not permitted to commercially buy or sell coins.
