Sell Your 1766 William Pitt Half Penny 1c Error NGC MS63 Brown
Early American currency went through several stages of development during the colonial and post-Revolutionary history of the United States. In 1765, Parliament passed the Stamp Act, requiring that tax stamps be bought from agents of Britain and placed on all legal and commercial documents and even newspapers in all the American colonies. Leading the opposition to the act in Britain was William Pitt, the first Earl of Chatham and known as the Great Commoner. Soon to become Prime Minister, he felt that Britain’s control over the colonies did not need to extend to taxation. The Stamp Act was repealed in 1766.
