King William IV Autograph Letter Signed — “…as for this rascal Bonaparte, I wish he was at the bottom of the sea…”
Exceptional autograph letter signed by King William IV, while he served as Duke of Clarence in 1803. William gives his candid opinion of Napoleon, whose empire was rapidly expanding at the time of the letter, dated 15 December 1803. Written from the Duke’s Bushy House residence in London to an unknown recipient, William writes of Napoleon, “…as for this rascal Bonaparte, I wish he was at the bottom of the sea: all naval officers think invasion impossible and that is clearly my opinion…” With additional content on Napoleon, though difficult to read. Boldly signed, “Yours sincerely / William” at the conclusion of the 2pp. letter. Single sheet measures 7.5″ x 9.25″. Toning and small holes at intersecting folds. Very good condition. Sold for $893.
King William IV Military Document Signed — 1833
King William IV signed document. In giant script, he signs ”William R” across the upper left. The partially-printed document is datelined St. James, 27 January 1833, appointing Frederick George Ainslie to First Lieutenant in the 21st Regiment of Foot or Royal North British Fusiliers. Ainslie was involved in the Crimean War and died commanding his regiment in 1854. An assortment of stamping and seals are present on the left. Countersigned by Lord Melbourne. Single page measures 13.5” x 9.25”. Toning, creasing and foxing. Very good. Sold for $468.
King William IV Document Signed During the First Few Months of His Reign in 1830
King William IV document signed “William RI [Rex Imperator]” at the upper left. Document is dated 31 December 1830, six months after he ascended the throne, and appoints one William Yolland Gent to the position of Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers. Partially-printed document measures 15.5″ x 11.75″. Toning and discoloration along folds; overall very good. Sold for $376.
