George Washington Franking Signature — Address Panel to Fellow Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan

George Washington free frank signature, signed “Go: Washington” on a leaf addressed to Brigadier General Daniel Morgan. Undated, but addressed to Morgan near Winchester, Virginia, where Morgan lived after the Revolutionary War. Since Morgan was promoted to Major General in 1794, this leaf was written sometime before then, possibly during Washington’s service as President. Document measures 5.625″ x 3.25″, with trimmed lower edge, and mounted to flexible backing. Light wear, discoloration and folds, one through the tail end of Washington’s signature. Overall very good condition with a large signature by Washington. Sold for $13,650.

George Washington Autograph Free Frank Signature in 1779 as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army During the Revolutionary War

George Washington free franked envelope, signed and addressed in Washington’s hand as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Washington addresses Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Walton White of the 4th Regiment Light Dragoons, with ”public service” also written on the address panel by Washington. Docketing on side panel in another hand reveals the date of 10 February 1779, at which time White served with the 4th Light Dragoons; White previously served as Washington’s aide-de-camp in 1775.

Washington’s large signature, ”Go: Washington” measures approximately 3.5” x .75” on document measuring 13.5” x 8.25”. With paper loss around partial red wax seal where opened, and folds, not affecting Washington’s signature. Some soiling, but overall in very good condition with a prominent signature by the General and first President. Sold for $10,000.

George Washington Franking Signature During the Revolutionary War — From 25 September 1777 Just One Day Before the British Captured Philadelphia

George Washington free frank signature, signed “Go: Washington” on a leaf addressed to Brigadier General Alexander McDougall. Docketing on panel is dated 25 September 1777 during Washington’s Philadelphia campaign during the Revolutionary War, the day before the British captured Philadelphia, the seat of revolution where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Document measures 9″ x 7.25″, with red wax seal present. Partial paper loss from seal, and archival tape repair on verso. Overall very good condition. Sold for $9,900.

George Washington Free Frank Signed — Scarce

Scarce free frank signed by George Washington as General of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Free frank is clearly signed ”G Washington” to the lower left, next to a notation in another hand, ”Major Genl St. Clair / Springfield”, referring to Washington’s aide-de-camp Arthur St. Clair. The free frank is affixed to a paper mount, to which a period slip is also attached reading, ”General Washington / February 27, 1780 / Morris Town”. At this time, George Washington’s Continental Army was experiencing several defeats, before its ultimate victory less than two years later at Yorktown. Free frank measures 6.75” x 3.5” with total document measuring 8.5” x 5”. Foxing, toning and a closed tear to top. Some chipping to the edges, though overall in very good condition considering age. A scarce and very collectible Presidential free frank signed. Sold for $9,799.

George Washington Franking Signature During the Revolutionary War

George Washington free frank signature, signed “Go: Washington” on a leaf addressed to Major General Alexander McDougall at West Point, New York. Document is undated, but sometime after 1780 when McDougall commanded the Army at West Point after Benedict Arnold’s defection. Document measures 10″ x 8.25″, with red wax seal present. Partial paper loss from seal, separation starting at fold lines, and small holes at intersecting folds. Overall very good condition, with prominent signature by Washington. Sold for $9,000.

George Washington Franking Signature During the Revolutionary War — From 24 September 1777 Just Two Days Before the British Captured Philadelphia

George Washington free frank signature, signed ”Go: Washington” on a leaf addressed to Brigadier General Alexander McDougall. Docketing on panel is dated 24 September 1777 during Washington’s Philadelphia campaign during the Revolutionary War, two days before the British captured Philadelphia, the seat of revolution where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Document measures 7” x 7.75”, with red wax seal present. Partial paper loss from seal, archival tape repair on verso, and fold through tail end of Washington’s signature. Overall very good condition. Sold for $8,750.

Rare George Washington Revolutionary War Franking Signature — Signed ”Go: Washington”

George Washington signature as a General in the Revolutionary War, signed ”Go: Washington”. Original letter was written by Washington from Headquarters at Morris Town, New Jersey, on 31 January 1777 and requested aid for the Continental army. Signature is on a neatly cut franked address leaf as one of 14 letters written on 31 January 1777, which are listed in Fitzpatrick’s ”The Writings of George Washington from the Original Manuscript Sources 1745-1799”, each having to do with the Revolutionary War. Each letter was signed and addressed on the integral leaf and Washington would additionally sign his name using his franking privilege as an officer. Verso has a handwritten note by genealogist and antiquarian John Farmer, ”From the cover of a letter dated / at Morristown, 31 Jan. 1777.” Measures 2.75” x 1” with some dampstaining and toning throughout, else very good condition. Sold for $8,438.00.

George Washington Franking Signature

George Washington franking signature. Washington signs his name ”Go: Washington” in black ink below the address, ”His Excellency / The President V. Council of the State of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia”. Paper is mounted below engraved portrait of Washington. Measures 6” x 2.75”. Comes with provenance written on back of frame, stating piece was inherited. Vertical fold through signature, small piece of left corner missing and toning, overall very good condition. Sold for $7,500.
