Sell Your Samuel Smith Autograph

Samuel Francis Smith was an author, journalist and Baptist minister. He may be best remembered for writing the lyrics of the patriot song “America (My Country, ‘Tis of Thee)”, which is to the tune of “God Save the Queen” and considered one of America’s national anthems. Smith wrote the lyrics of “America” in thirty minutes in 1831 and the song was first performed by Smith’s composer friend Lowell Mason at a children’s Independence Day festival. Smith wrote over 150 hymn lyrics during his lifetime, many of which are found The Psalmist collection he worked on with minister and writer Baron Stow.

Samuel Francis Smith Handwritten & Signed Copy of “America” — His Magnum Opus, Also Titled “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”

Samuel Francis Smith complete handwritten manuscript signed of his famous song, “America”. Written in 1832, the song here is written in full, with four stanzas in total, and signed at the conclusion, “S.F. Smith. / 1832-1883.” Card-style document measures 5″ x 8″ with writing on first and third pages. Some showthrough of mounting remnants to verso, and a small separation forming along fold of page two. Near fine condition. An excellent piece for display. Sold for $1,601.

Samuel Smith Autograph Poem Signed of ”America” — ”My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”

Autograph poem signed by American poet Samuel Smith, dated 2 January 1895. Here, Smith hand-writes the first stanza of his famous patriotic poem-turned-song, ”My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” which he originally entitled ”America.” Reads in full: ”America / My country ’tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing. Land where my father died, Land of the Pilgrim’s pride, From every mountain side, let freedom ring.” Signed ”S.F. Smith / Written in 1832 / January 2nd 1895”. Dated the same year he died. Poem measures 5” x 8” on 1pp. Toning, more so on the right hand side, with a chip to the upper right corner and a small hole to the upper left corner. Small separation at fold has been archivally repaired. Very good condition. Sold for $1,420.

Samuel Francis Smith Signed & Handwritten First Stanza of His Beloved Song ”America”

Samuel Francis Smith signed and handwritten first stanza of ”America”, the United States’ beloved patriotic song for which Smith wrote the lyrics. In full: ”My country, ’tis of thee, / Sweet land of liberty, / Of thee I sing; / Land where my fathers died, / land of the pilgrims’ pride, / From every mountain side, / Let freedom ring. / S.F. Smith. / Written in 1832. / This autograph, Oct. 12, ’94.” Paper measures 4.25” x 6.25”, matted with sheet music for ”America” upon a document featuring the American flag waving in the wind, measuring 14” x 11” in total. Folds to lyrics and affixed to mat in two spots, at top and bottom of page, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $1,100.

Samuel Francis Smith signed first stanza of ”America”, the United States’ beloved patriotic song for which Smith wrote the lyrics. In full: ”My country, ’tis of thee, / Sweet land of liberty, / Of thee I sing; / Land where my fathers died, / land of the pilgrims’ pride, / From every mountainside, / Let freedom ring. / S. F. Smith. / Written 1832. / Nov. 10, 1892.” Card measures 3” x 2.5”. Uniform toning, inscription and mounting traces upon verso, overall in near fine condition. Sold for $938.

Samuel F. Smith Autograph Quotation Signed From ”America,” or ”My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”

Samuel Francis Smith autograph quotation signed. The author of the patriotic song, ”America,” or ”My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” writes the first stanza of the song, in full: ”My country, ’tis of thee, / Sweet land of liberty, / Of thee I sing; / Land where my fathers died, / Land of the pilgrims’ pride, / From every mountain side / Let freedom ring. / [signed] S. F. Smith.” Single-page quote is dated 25 March 1895, less than a year before Smith’s death. Measures 4” x 5.75”. Lightly toned, else fine. Sold for $625.

Samuel Francis Smith Autograph Letter Signed From 1895 — Believed to be the Last Letter He Wrote

Samuel Francis Smith autograph letter signed, datelined Newton Centre on 19 October 1895. Lyricist of patriotic anthem, ”My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, Francis died suddenly on 16 November 1895 while traveling by train to preach in Boston. He writes to an unnamed woman, ”My dear Lady / Yes, Tuesday is the day; and I expect to go to East Bridgewater in the train which leaves Boston at 10:15 a.m. and I suppose reaches you at 11:40 a.m. I anticipate much pleasure in the visit, and I hope it may be one of pleasure and profit to yourselves and the young ladies. / Sincerely yrs. / S. F. Smith”. Single page letter on card-style stationery measures 4.5” x 7”. A contemporary inscription on the verso reads, ”Dr. S.F. Smith last letter.” Light creasing and folds, else near fine. Sold for $250.
