The Watergate scandal occurred before and following the 1972 election when thieves broke into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee inside the Watergate development. The ensuing investigation revealed that the burglars were affiliated with President Nixon’s reelection committee and had also wiretapped phones and stole documents. Reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post were responsible for exposing the Watergate scandal and President Nixon’s abuse of power. These efforts won them a Pulitzer Prize for their work. Woodward and Bernstein authored the book All the President’s Men, summarizing their investigative reporting, which was later adapted into an Academy-Award winning film staring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman.
