Ludwig Bemelmans “Madeline and the Gypsies” signed by Bemelmans, who adds a delightful hand drawn sketch of his famous character. First edition, first printing published in New York: Viking: 1959. The author sketches Madeline in a gypsy hat and inscribes, “A Marc Antoine with love from his parent Ludwig”. Bemelmans was Marc Antoine’s godfather. 9″ x 12″ book is bound in green cloth boards with colorful illustrated pastedowns and endpapers. Bumping to board corners, else near fine. Chipping and minor paper loss to unclipped original dust jacket; very good. Sold for $1,892.

Limited first edition copy of Ludwig Bemelmans ”Madeline and the Bad Hat” signed. New York: Viking: 1956. The author and illustrator sketches the boy in the bad hat upon the verso of the front free endpaper. He begins his inscription there and completes it on the limitation page: ”To Marc Antoine with love from Stevie and his Godfather / with Love again / Ludwig / Nov 28, 56.” This copy is number 885 of 985 printed. 9” x 12” book is bound in green cloth boards with colorful illustrated pastedowns and endpapers. No dustjacket. Book is in near fine condition. Sold for $1,172.

Ludwig Bemelmans ”Madeline in London” signed. New York: Viking: 1961. The author sketches a portrait of a child in the ”bad hat” on horseback and inscribes the half-title page, ”A Marc Antoine with love Ludwig”. Bemelmans was Marc Antoine’s godfather. 9” x 12” book is bound in red cloth boards with colorful illustrated pastedowns and endpapers. Book and unclipped original dustjacket are in near fine condition. Sold for $1,000.

Ludwig Bemelmans Hand-Drawn Sketch & Signed Inscription Within His Popular Book, ”Madeline’s Rescue”

Ludwig Bemelmans hand-drawn, signed sketch within ”Madeline’s Rescue” published by Viking: New York: 1953. Upon the half title page, the author and illustrator renders an original sketch of a child holding an object overhead while seated inside what appears to be a boat, which would have come in handy for the title character, who nearly drowned when she fell into the river in the story. Beneath the sketch, Bemelmans’ autograph inscription reads: ”To my godson / with love / Ludwig”. Light foxing and soiling to pages of 9” x 12” book, bound in red cloth boards and containing illustrated pastedowns and endpapers. Moderate paper loss and tearing with tape repairs to original unclipped dustjacket. Overall very good. An extraordinarily rare original sketch by Bemelmans, signed. Sold for $1,000.
