Louis Glanzman was an American self-taught illustrator who worked as a freelance artist beginning in the 1950s, with credits that include the Pippi Longstocking books and well-known magazines such as Reader’s Digest, The Saturday Evening Post, Time and The New Yorker. His range was very diverse and encompassed the genres of portrait, scenic, historical, caricature and wildlife. Some of Glanzman’s art is on display at the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian and the Civil War Life Museum in Virginia.

The Original Artwork for “The Illustrated Man”, by Louis Glanzman — Ray Bradbury Personally Owned

Ray Bradbury personally owned painting by Louis Glanzman, commissioned as the cover art for the 1963 edition of Bradbury’s book, “The Illustrated Man”, first published in 1951. Art depicts the title character, whose unique, animated tattoos serve as the frame story that ties together Bradbury’s compilation of 18 short stories. This character of the tattooed man reappears later in Bradbury’s classic, “Something Wicked This Way Comes”. Glanzman’s painting is casein on board, with a transparent overlay containing drawings of several of the eerie tattoos as well as contrasting paint highlights. Measures 15.75″ x 27.25″. Overlay is taped to board around its edges. Verso bears ink notations, likely by the book’s publisher from printing. Painting itself is near fine. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $10,000.

Hannes Bok Art From the Personal Collection of Ray Bradbury

Ray Bradbury personally owned art by early sci-fi fanzine artist Hannes Bok, whose career he launched. An outspoken admirer of Bok’s art, Bradbury actively promoted Bok at the first WorldCon (World Science Fiction Convention) in 1939, and ”Weird Tales” magazine picked up the unknown artist. Painting depicts a transparent queen chess piece being moved by a human hand, contrasting sharply with the dark background, in which a desert scape is visible with mountains on the horizon and nude men running through the scene. Acrylic on illustration board painting is unsigned. Matted and framed to an overall size of 15” x 21.5”. Near fine. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $10,000.

Preliminary cover art by Joseph Mugnaini for Bradbury’s masterpiece, ”Fahrenheit 451”. Watercolor and sketch features the same figure recognizable in the final artwork used for the first edition cover. Measures 3.5” x 5.75”. Slightly irregular edges, otherwise near fine. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $4,654.
