Norman Rockwell Four Freedoms Posters Sold

Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms artwork from 1943 are among his most well-known works and were inspired by President Franklin Roosevelt’s State of the Union address on human rights. The Four Freedoms first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post and were so popular that the public requested reprints. In 1994 postage stamps of the artwork were released to celebrate Rockwell’s 100th birthday. The original Four Freedoms artwork has been part of several traveling exhibits since 1943 and is currently displayed at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts.

Norman Rockwell “Freedom” Four Poster Set — Original 1943 Printing

Original set of “Freedom” posters by Norman Rockwell, produced in 1943 from paintings Rockwell created to commemorate the Four Freedoms outlined by President Roosevelt in his 1941 State of the Union address. Roosevelt posited that everyone across the world should enjoy four basic freedoms: Freedom of Religion, Freedom From Want, Freedom From Fear and Freedom of Speech. Americans were so moved by these “human freedoms” that over $130 million dollars were raised in WWII bonds from display of Rockwell’s paintings. Each poster measures 20″ x 28″ and has one vertical and three horizontal folds. Set remains in near fine condition. Sold for $2,507.

Norman Rockwell’s Original 1943 ”Four Freedoms” Poster Set — Each Measures 20” x 28”

Original set of ”Four Freedoms” posters by Norman Rockwell from 1943. Four posters depict ”Freedom of Speech”, ”Freedom of Worship”, ”Freedom from Want” and ”Freedom from Fear”, four tenets of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 State of the Union address that were subsequently incorporated into the United Nations charter. Rockwell was so inspired by the speech that he created the oil paintings in 1943, which were then featured in ”The Saturday Evening Post” and reproduced as war bond posters by the Office of War Information. Original posters have OWI printing information at bottom, including the date of 1943. Each poster measures 20” x 28”. Original folds and light toning and foxing, and subtle bumping to margins. Overall a very good set, as colors remain bright with very little toning. Sold for $2,250.
