1984 Olympics Torch Los Angeles Sold

Los Angeles, California hosted the Summer Olympics of 1984 and brought together over 6,800 athletes from 140 nations. Synchronised swimming, rhythmic gymnastics and women’s cycling road race made their Olympic debut at the 1984 Games. The 1984 Olympic torch relay was the first to charge torchbearers a fee for participation and consisted of over 3,600 participants who helped raise almost $11 million for charities. The relay route covered about 9,300 miles of the U.S. and decathlete and actor Rafer Johnson was the final torchbearer who lit the cauldron.

Olympic Torch From the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games — Inscribed With Olympic Motto

Olympic Torch from the 1984 Los Angeles summer games, inscribed with the Olympic motto: ”Citius, Altius, Fortius” (Faster, Deeper, More). These games are best remembered for Carl Lewis winning four gold medals and Mary Lou Retton becoming an American sensation by capturing the gymnastics all-around competition. Torch is constructed of spun aluminum with an antique brass finish and light grey leather handle. Wrapped around the top bowl along with three brass bands, is an image of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where track and field events were held. The center band reads: ”Games of the XXXIIIrd Olympiad / Los Angeles 1984”. Metal which caps the end of the handle bears an LAOOC 1983 copyright stamp and is also marked ”Turner Ind., Inc. / Irwindale, CA.” Torch burns wind-resistant propane lasting up to 50 minutes. Measures 22” and weighs two pounds, four ounces. From the Ken Kragen Collection. Light dings to upper portion and light wear to leather, else fine. Sold for $3,049.

Bronze Medal From the 1992 Summer Olympics, Held in Barcelona, Spain

Bronze medal from the XXV Olympiad, won at the Olympic games in Barcelona, Spain in 1992. Medal, designed by the sculptor Xavier Corbero, features a smaller medal slightly off-center upon the larger portion of the medal. Medal features an image of the goddess of victory with “XXV Olimpiada Barcelona 1992″ on obverse, and the official logo of the 1992 games borne to verso. Measures 70 mm or 2.75” in diameter. Weighs 228 grams or 8 oz. Near fine. Sold for $5,125.

Olympic Torch From the 2010 Olympic Games Held in Vancouver

Olympic torch from the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. The Torch Relay tradition was begun in 1928, where a spark from the parent flame in Olympia, Greece ignites the torch that begins the Relay, ending in the host city in time for the opening ceremonies, in this case Vancouver on 12 February 2010. Elegant white torch has colorful ”Vancouver 2010” to center, and contains silver metal casing featuring ”With Glowing Hearts” written in English and French. Accompanied by official gray cloth case, as well as official unused clothes to be worn by the torchbearer on the relay route. Outfit includes a white, green and blue size XL windbreaker, a ”one size fits all” white knit hat, and red ”Vancouver 2010” knit mittens. Torch measures 37” long and 3” at its widest point. Also includes official certificate of participation from the Olympic organizing committee. Torch has discoloration to top from where flame was lit. Near fine condition overall. Sold for $3,125.

Olympic Torch From the 1988 Olympic Games Held in Seoul, South Korea

Olympic torch from the 1988 Olympic Torch Relay. The Torch Relay tradition was begun in 1928, where a spark from the parent flame in Olympia, Greece ignites the torch that begins the Relay, ending in the host city in time for the opening ceremonies, in this case Seoul on 17 September 1988. Gold torch contains handle with brown leather grip and maroon handle guard with “Games of The XXIVth Olympiad Seoul 1988” and Korean characters written in gold raised lettering. Bowl portion features black and gold engraving of two dragons, symbolizing the unity between the East and West, and with the red, blue and yellow “Seoul 1988″ Olympic logo to bottom portion of the bowl. Measures 20″ long with bowl measuring 4” in diameter. Near fine condition. Sold for $2,294.
