Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises 1st Edition Sold
Ernest Hemingway was a 20th century journalist, novelist and short story writer. He began his writing career as a journalist like American authors Mark Twain, Stephen Crane and Sinclair Lewis. Hemingway’s journalistic style was considered minimalist and embodied the iceberg theory, a term he created. This conservative approach to writing greatly influenced fiction of the 20th century. Hemingway wrote seven novels and won the 1954 Nobel Prize in literature for the novel The Old Man and the Sea.

“The Sun Also Rises” 1st Edition Rare Book
“The Sun Also Rises” by Ernest Hemingway, Charles Scriber’s Sons, New York: 1926. First edition, first state. Hardcover octavo rare book bound in black cloth with printed gilt label on front cover and spine; fore edges untrimmed. One of only 5,090 copies issued in the first run, bearing the first-issue “stoppped” on page 181. Wear to boards and spine title, though interior has only minimal foxing. A rare edition of Hemingway’s second novel in very good condition. Sold for $1,304.

Ernest Hemingway signed ”For Whom The Bell Tolls,” Scribner’s: New York: 1940. First printing is indicated by Scribner’s ”A” printed to the copyright page. The Nobel Laureate author inscribes the front free endpaper: ”To F.C. Cleary With Very Best Wishes / Ernest Hemingway”. Hemingway was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for this novel, about a soldier in the Spanish Civil War. Bound in oatmeal cloth boards with red print block to spine. Runs 471pp. Measures 6” x 8.5”. Beneath the inscription, a discreet pencil notation reads ”12-17-40”. Toning to backstrip and endpapers with scratching to tail edge, else fine. Sold for $4,570.

Ernest Hemingway signed ”A Farewell to Arms”, inscribed on the flyleaf, ”For W.N. Gardner / wishing him all good luck / Ernest Hemingway.” New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1929. Bound in publisher’s black boards, with red paper labels. Measures 5.75” x 8.25”. Some sunning to spine label, and light shelf wear. Front joint torn slightly at top edge. Overall very good condition. An attractive example of Hemingway’s classic, nicely signed by him. Sold for $3,125.

Scarce ”Green Hills of Africa” Signed and Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway to His Friend, Clara Spiegel
Very rare Ernest Hemingway’s ”Green Hills of Africa” signed ”Papa” and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: ”To Clara [Spiegel] who has seen and been in Africa / this attempt to do the same / with love Papa [underlined]”. A fellow author, Spiegel was a good friend of Hemingway’s with whom he socialized when he visited Sun Valley. Charles Scribner’s Sons: New York: 1953. In publisher’s original green cloth boards with front cover blindstamped and lettered in gilt. Also in original dustjacket, which has significant tears and a large portion of rear panel missing. Book measures 5.75” x 8.5” and is in very good condition. Sold for $3,049.
First edition, first printing of Ernest Hemingway’s novel ”The Old Man and the Sea,” published by Charles Scribner’s Sons: New York: 1952. The publisher’s stamp and letter ”A” appear on the copyright page. Unclipped dustjacket is also a first issue. Hemingway’s tale about an old Cuban fisherman who engages in a violent battle to conquer a giant Marlin in the Gulf Stream earned the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953. Bound in sky blue fabric boards with blind stamped front board and silver lettering to the spine. Mild toning around board perimeters and wear to board corners and spine ends. Prior owner’s name inscribed to the front free endpaper, else fine. Toning to dustjacket especially at edges and surface loss to the paper at the front hinge and spine ends, else fine. Sold for $1,220.
