Hunter S Thompson Hell’s Angels 1st Edition

Hunter S Thompson was an American author and journalist. He spent a year living and traveling with the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club while writing his first book in 1966, Hell’s Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs. The book began initially as an article for The Nation which the Hell’s Angels were aware of, and they even read drafts of the article to ensure Thompson had the correct facts. Hell’s Angels brought Thompson widespread fame as a journalist and he wrote for many well-established U.S. magazines such as Harper’s and The New York Times Magazine.

Hunter Thompson “Hell’s Angels” Rare Book

“Hell’s Angels. A Strange and Terrible Saga” by Hunter S. Thompson. Random House: New York: 1966. First printing, First edition. Octavo hardcover rare book with dustjacket. Black cloth boards feature a silver gilt motorcycle rider on front and red and silver gilt lettering on spine. Thompson reports on his year living with the notorious bikers. Dustjacket contains tears along margins. Overall very good condition. A rare item from the original “gonzo” journalist. Sold for $660.

Hunter S. Thompson Autograph Letter Signed, With His Drawing of a Stick Figure of “God” Over the Sun

Hunter S. Thompson autograph letter signed, dated 6 June in 1963 from Deland, Florida. Thompson writes to his childhood friend Paul Semonin, playfully addressing him as Karl (Marx). Letter reads in small part, “Dear Karl…Our disasters are private, our bombast is public, & our shame & desperation is secretly shared…H”. Two page letter on two sheets measures 8.5″ x 11″, with an additional sheet devoted to Thompson’s drawing of a stick figure of “God” over the sun, signed “Dr. Sax – ’63”. Creasing, else near fine. Sold for $1,500.

Hunter S. Thompson Typed Letter, With Handwritten Additions — “the Dylan ‘stone you’ record just came on – 5:55 AM”

Hunter S. Thompson typed letter, with additional handwritten notations by the literary maverick. Dated 14 April (1966), Thompson writes to his friend Paul Semonin, composed on stationery from Harbin Springs, California. Letter reads in part, “the Dylan ‘stone you’ record just came on – 5:55 AM – the beach-head seems to be holding…My Quick Raid on NY# turned into a 2-week battle of wills, desperation and LSD…Hell’s Angels is unexplainably postponed to full (autumn) list. Money postponed too…” Single page measures 8.5″ x 11″. Very good to near fine condition. Sold for $1,500.

Hunter S. Thompson Autograph Letter Signed — “Ugly times here. Friend Trudi has decided to make the ranch into a pottery shop…which means we’re evicted…”

Hunter S. Thompson autograph letter signed, composed on custom stationery for “Owl Farm”, his ranch in Woody Creek, Colorado. Although Thompson wrote that he bought his famous ranch in 1966 from his friend Trudi Pederson, he writes here that he’s facing eviction. Dated 17 March 1967, letter reads in part, “Ugly times here. Friend Trudi has decided to make the ranch into a pottery shop as of May 1 – which means we’re evicted…I’m still trembling from the trip – had to fly to Toronto from L.A. for a TV show [on the Hell’s Angels], then stagger back here. I am not well. Send word. H”. Single page letter measures 8.5″ x 11″. Fold and one spot of foxing, else near fine. Sold for $1,472.

Hunter S. Thompson Letter Signed — “…my pendulum has swung toward the sun, and now I fear the inevitable plunge toward darkness. Maybe I will go off a cliff on the cycle…”

Hunter S. Thompson letter signed “HST”, with visceral, vague content on his finances and state of mind. Composed 3 February 1961 from “Manor House” in Big Sur, Thompson writes to his friend Paul Semonin, referring to the “Birmingham bit”, his suicide plan to drive off a cliff in a car filled with dynamite. Letter reads in part, “Dear Whoremonger: I have found a new elegance. But the money ran out on Friday & Maxine [Ambus] is beating the wolves away from the door…Tonight, however, I drink rum and write on gold leaf…”. Two page letter on a single sheet of Italian stationery measures 5.75″ x 7.75″. Fold, touching bottom of signature, else near fine. Sold for $1,016.
