Hugh Duffy Autograph Sold at Nate D. Sanders

Hugh Duffy was a baseball player between the years of 1888 and 1906 for the Chicago White Stockings, Chicago Pirates, Boston Reds, Boston Beaneaters, Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies. He played outfield but was best-known for being an extremely talented hitter. His best batting average was a record-breaking .440 during the 1894 season with the Beaneaters. Today Duffy’s .440 average still remains the highest full-season batting average in the MLB.

Following Duffy’s retirement as a player, he remained in baseball as a coach, manager, owner, and scout. As a coach with the Boston Red Sox, he worked with Ted Williams on hitting when Williams’s batting average was .406 in 1941. Duffy spent an impressive 68 years working in the field of baseball and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.
