John Steinbeck East of Eden Signed Sold

John Steinbeck was an American author who received the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His notable works include Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden. Many of Steinbeck’s novels revolve around social and economic issues of the working class. East of Eden takes place in the Salinas Valley, where Steinbeck grew up, and he intended to capture the details and imagery of the Salinas Valley for his children. East of Eden was adapted into a 1955 film of the same title that stars James Dean.

We at Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold a first edition signed copy of East of Eden for $1,800. Please see the description below:

Signed 1st “East of Eden” Steinbeck

Signed limited edition copy of “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck. Viking Press: 1952. One of just 1,500 first edition copies signed by the author, 750 of which were intended for private distribution. Signed, “John Steinbeck” in blue ink to limitation page. First issue volume with all points present including “bite” for “bight” on p. 281, line 38. Sans dustjacket and publisher’s slipcase. Minor wear to green cloth boards. 1.5″ separation to rear hinge though binding remains tight. Overall, very good condition. Sold for $1,800.

John Steinbeck “Cup of Gold” 1st Ed.

First printing of John Steinbeck’s first book, “Cup of Gold”. New York: McBride, 1929. One of only 1,537 copies printed, this volume still retains the very rare unclipped first edition dust jacket, showing the original price of $2.50. First edition has matching dates of 1929 on the title and copyright pages, and with “First Published, August, 1929″ at the top of the copyright page. Measures 5.5″ x 8”. Very handsome copy is bound in yellow-gold cloth stamped in black, with top edge blue. Very light soiling and wear to book, otherwise near fine. Dust jacket is restored for display by noted conservator John Pofelski, otherweise near fine condition. Sold for $8,743.

John Steinbeck Signed Copy of ”The Grapes of Wrath” — Fine Piece of American Literature Signed by the Author the Year After He Won the Nobel Prize

”The Grapes of Wrath” signed by its author, John Steinbeck. Viking Press: New York: 1963. Signed by the author the year after he received the Nobel Prize, and a few years before his death: ”For M. Klemaszewski from John Steinbeck 11/20/63” on the half-title page. A fine example of Steinbeck’s epic American novel, which largely contributed to his winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. 5” x 7.75” book runs 619pp. Partial separation of front hinge, limited soiling to boards and light wear on both joints. Very good condition. Sold for $1,562.

John Steinbeck Signed ”The Short Novels of John Steinbeck” — 1st Printing in Original Dustjacket

John Steinbeck signed first edition, first printing of ”The Short Novels of John Steinbeck,” Viking: New York: 1953. The Nobel Prize-winning author inscribes the front free endpaper: ”For Hank Pearson / with best wishes / John Steinbeck / New York 1953”. This first edition in its original dustjacket is a compilation of six of his moving stories: ”Tortilla Flat,” ”The Red Pony,” ”Of Mice and Men,” ”The Moon is Down,” ”Cannery Row” and ”The Pearl.” Bound in brick red cloth boards with black lettering. Top edge yellow. Original grey and orange unclipped dustjacket is near fine. Book has small areas of discoloration on signature page and rear free endpaper, else fine. Sold for $1,250.
