John Knowles Autograph Sold
John Knowles was a writer who is best-known for his first published book, A Separate Peace (1959). As an American classic, it continues to be one of the most popular coming of age books that shows the more sinister side of adolescence. The novel was adapted into a 1972 film of the same name that features Parker Stevenson. A Separate Peace is a New York Times bestseller and won the William Faulkner Foundation Award as well as The National Book Award.

John Knowles Signed Book
“A Separate Peace” by John Knowles. New York: The Macmillan Company: 1959. Inscribed to front free endpaper “To Joey / A new friend, and one I hope for all the future / With all best thoughts / John Knowles / Southhampton, L.I. / May 2, 1973.” Hardcover octavo with gray cloth boards runs 186pp. Accompanied by dustjacket. Book remains clean and bright. Dustjacket shows wear and foxing, with slight tears to the verso and edges. Overall very good condition. Sold for $977.

J.D. Salinger Letter Signed — ”…I’m glad if that old story read all right…”
J.D. Salinger typed letter signed, responding to a man appreciative of his storytelling. Dated 1 June 1970, Salinger writes, ”Thanks very much for your nice letter. I’m glad if that old story read all right. And the particular comment you made is very welcome. Again, thank you…[signed] J.D. Salinger”. Letter measures 8.25” x 11”. Folds including one through signature, otherwise near fine condition. Salinger’s signature in black fountain pen is exceptionally bold. With original envelope postmarked from Windsor, Vermont on 3 June 1970. Sold for $2,500.
Harper Lee Autograph Note Signed — Lee Pens a Response Writing That She Can’t Respond
Personal, handwritten response from ”To Kill a Mockingbird” novelist Harper Lee to a would-be penpal. Lee’s southern manners are in fine display here, as she feels compelled to write her admirer, telling him that she can’t respond. Letter reads in full: ”I have had a stroke and cannot answer mail. Thanks anyway! Harper Lee”. Large, clear signature in blue ink. Two pages, front and verso, measure 8.5” x 11”. Expected creases from mailing; near fine. Sold for $2,436.
Raymond Chandler TLS
Typed letter signed by crime writer Raymond Chandler dated 16 January 1958. Chandler writes to a friend and agent Edgar Carter, (also an agent to Ira Gershwin). Letter on Chandler’s personal stationery reads in part, “…There is no scalping in London. Agencies are allowed to charge a fixed fee but are not allowed to buy up blocks of tickets. The English are, by our standards a very law-abiding people…” Letter is signed, “…Ray.” in blue ink. Accompanied by cover. Overall excellent condition. Sold for $1,130.
