Harvey Milk Autograph Sold

Harvey Milk served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1978 as one of the first openly gay American politicians. While on the Board of Supervisors he helped pass legislation that protected individuals’ employment regardless of their sexual orientation. Other achievements of Milk included improving public transportation, public parks and police protection. Milk successfully advocated against the passing of California’s Proposition 6 of the 1978 election that would ban gay and lesbian teachers. Milk was assassinated in November of 1978 after serving on the Board of Supervisors for less than a year. Despite his short time in politics, he was a strong leader in the LGBTQ community and helped pave the way more human rights.
