Charles Bukowski Autograph Letter Signed With Hand-Drawn Sketches — “…I still write and drink and gamble…I always had the need to write but never thought I’d be this lucky…” — Attractive Letter With Excellent Content

Autograph letter signed by poet, novelist, and short story writer, Charles Bukowski. Dated 16 November 1984, Bukowski writes to a policeman friend in Germany, in part: “It’s all right to be a policeman. Without some kind of law, many of the people would be at each other’s throats. I still write and drink and gamble. My editor publishes about a book a year. I always had the need to write but never thought I’d be this lucky. Now don’t get shot, and go easy on the drunks.” Signed “Buk.” Bukowski has highlighted his letter with five small sketches to the edges of the page, including a dog, a bird, and the sun. Accompanied by cover addressed in his hand, and signed in the return address area, “Bukowski.” Single page letter measures 8.5″ x 11″. In near fine condition, with light toning to edges, and a small tear to top edge. Sold for $2,507.

Charles Bukowski signed first edition of “Ham on Rye”, Black Sparrow Press: Santa Barbara: 1982. This is number 257 in an edition limited to 350 signed copies. Bukowski adds a caricature drawing and signs “Charles Bukowski” to the limitation page, located at the rear of the book. Runs 283pp. Bound in pictorial boards with yellow cloth spine. Small puncture to the front joint, else near fine. Sold for $1,460.

Charles Bukowski signed contract regarding the publication of his volume “Factotum” in Portugese. 1984 “Memorandum of Agreement” between Charles Bukowski, Black Sparrow Press, Carl Weissner and Brazilian publisher, Editora Brasiliense. 3pp. contract signed in ink at conclusion in bold black ink, “Charles Bukowski.” Additionally signed by Black Sparrow Press publisher John Martin and Bukowski’s friend and translator, Carl Weissner. Contract measures 8.5″ x 10.5″. Excellent condition. Sold for $805.

Charles Bukowski hand-drawn illustration, signed ”Buk”. The legendary poet draws a cartoonish scene with animals, the sun and a flower accenting his drawing of a man with a bottle. Drawn upon the verso of a postcard sent to John Budan, a friend whom he first met in 1973 in San Francisco. Card is matted to a black sheet of construction paper, measuring 6” x 4”. Card measures 5.75” x 3.75”. Near fine. Sold for $500.
