Alexander Fleming Autograph Sold

Sir Alexander Fleming was a scientist who won the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his findings on the antibiotic Penicillin G derived from the mold P. chrysogenum. Antiseptics were used prior to the discovery of antibiotics, but only treated surface bacteria and often made infections worse due to their inability to kill bacteria tucked deep into wounds. Fleming observed solders who died from sepsis due to infected injuries in World War I and remarked that antiseptics were causing more fatalities than actual infections.

Early into his penicillin research Fleming noted that bacteria could develop resistance to antibiotics if the dose was too small or treatment time was too short. He cautioned that the use of penicillin be only for warranted prescribed purposes and that the proper dose be used. Another of his scientific discoveries was the mechanism of action of the antimicrobial enzyme lysozyme, which is found in human secretions such as mucus, saliva and tears. Fleming was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century.
