James Monroe autograph letter signed, dated 16 December 1827, two years after he left the Presidency. Monroe’s financial situation, always strained, became very difficult after he left office when he sold Highland, his plantation in Albemarle County, Virginia. James Monroe Signed Autograph Letter

James Monroe signed autograph letter four months after he became President. To General Dearborn, former Secretary of War, regarding errors within the constitution and his future plans as stated in his inaugural address. Dated 11 July 1817, marked “private,” reads: “Dearborn / Not knowing whether I shall see you, as I understand you have not arrived here this morning, I enclose to you my [assured] to the address to which you are a party…The Constitution not recognizing a [dislocation] of parties, I have avoided it, but the interpretation is sufficiently plain…” Monroe opposed the 1787 Constitution ratification because it created too strong a central government. Although he voted against ratification, Monroe accepted the new government without misgivings, but his resentments are still present here. He goes on to discuss his future plans, “…I have explained myself fondly, as to the principles, on which I shall act. In this I have followed the spirit of my inaugural address…My best respects to Mrs. Dearborn. In great haste, with sincere respect, I am Dearborn yours…” Ends “James Monroe (signed)” with postscript reading, “I hope that my letter will [?] correctly, as it touches one person that is understanding.” 8″ x 10″, black ink, toning to edges, fold creases, matted nicely in wood frame. Fine. One of the best James Monroe signed letters that we have offered and an important historical document. Sold for $8,915.

James Monroe Letter Signed During the War of 1812 — as Secretary of State, Monroe Writes About Tripoli During Period of Strained Relations Before the Second Barbary War

Historically significant letter signed by James Monroe as Secretary of State, during the War of 1812. Datelined “Department of State / Sept. 14, 1812” Monroe writes to a B. Jones, who was apparently the liaison to purchase a present for Tripoli, in an effort to appease the country with whom America had a tense alliance. In the Treaty of Tripoli, which has incidentally been re-studied for its language regarding America as a Christian nation, the United States was to make payments to Tripoli in exchange for protection of its ships in the Mediterranean. These payments, however, grew larger and more aggressive, ultimately leading to the Second Barbary War in 1815. In full, “Sir, your letters of the 27 ult and 9th inst have been duly received. With respect to the Consular present for Tripoli, it is thought, on every account to be advisable to purchase it in Europe, either at Cadiz or some port in Italy. The danger of capture, if sent from this country and the comparatively low price at which every article composing the present, is to be had in Europe, are considerations which conclusively recommend this course. With your general instructions, will be sent as soon as other pressing engagements will permit, a list of the articles, which have on former occasions, been found to be most acceptable at Tripoli. To these will be added the bond required by law for the faithful performance of the consular duties. I have the honor to be respectfully, Sir, your ob. svt.” Then very boldly signed by the Secretary of State, “Jas Monroe”. Single page letter measures 7.75″ x 9.75″. Somewhat brittle paper, leading to chipping on margins, with no loss of content. Mild discoloration and toning and a 1″ separation along one fold. Overall in good condition. Sold for $1,286.

James Monroe Land Grant Signed as President — Monroe Grants 160 Acres of Illinois Property to a Veteran of the War of 1812

James Monroe land grant signed as President, deeding 160 acres in Illinois to Nathaniel Prouty, a veteran of the War of 1812. Document is signed on 3 November 1818, less than one month before Illinois officially became a U.S. state. Interestingly, writing on the verso shows that the land was subsequently sold eight months later in July 1819 to a George Forsyth who then sold it himself a month later, proving that real estate speculation is indeed timeless. This was technically against the law, as veterans who were granted land were required to keep the property for at least five years. Vellum document measures 13″ x 9″, matted and presented in a double-sided frame, measuring 21″ x 17″. Some foxing and toning, overall in very good condition. Sold for $719.
