Superman #3 CGC 4.0 Sold
Superman was created by artist Joe Shuster and writer Jerry Siegel and debuted in summer of 1938 in Action Comics #1. Shuster and Siegel met in high school and soon began collaborating. Together they broke out in the comics world with More Fun Comics for National Comics Publications, the precursor to D.C. Comics.
Although the character Superman was first published in 1938, Shuster and Siegel began developing it in 1932. They originally had hoped to sell the character to a newspaper comic strip, but after several years of knocking on doors they settled for a comic book. Shuster and Siegel both came from Jewish immigrant families which is believed to have shaped their work as Superman is also an immigrant who is assimilating into American culture. Shuster and Siegel created other characters together including Jimmy Olsen, Superboy, Ultra-Humanite, Lois Lane and Lex Luther. While at D.C. Comics Siegel also created many other characters such as Saturn Queen, Chameleon Boy, Phantom Girl, Lightning Lord and Invisible Kid among others.
Today the Superman franchise is among the most beloved of the super heroes. There have been numerous adaptations of the character in both television and film, including the very recent and lucrative 2017 film Justice League.
