Roger Chaffee Autograph Sold

We sold an autograph of Apollo 1 astronaut, Roger Chaffee, at auction for thousands of dollars. Lot details are below:

Roger Chaffee’s 1963 Astronaut Acceptance Letter, Signed By NASA Director Gilruth — “…great pleasure to inform you that you have been selected…to participate in Astronaut Training…”

Roger Chaffee’s original NASA acceptance letter on official NASA Manned Spacecraft Center letterhead, dated 16 October 1963 from Houston, Texas. Addressed to Lieutenant Roger B. Chaffee of Fairborn, Ohio. Reads in full: “Dear Lieutenant Chaffee: It is a great pleasure to inform you that you have been selected for assignment to the Manned Spacecraft Center to participate in Astronaut Training. It is planned to have you assigned to our Center early next year. Your specific reporting date will be coordinated with the Department of the Navy. The details of your assignment will be discussed with you after your arrival. Your background and proven abilities assure me that you are fully aware of the responsibilities you are assuming by accepting this appointment. I am certain that your forthcoming association with the Manned Spacecraft Center will prove to be of great benefit to our Country’s space program. Sincerely Robert R. Gilruth / Director”. One page letter measures 8″ x 10.5″. Several small pieces of transparent tape at edges and corners, not affecting text. Also includes an LOA from Martha Chaffee, the widow of the late Roger Chaffee, who died in a 1967 Apollo 1 pre-launch test. Recently sold for $7,767.50 as lot 41061 in Heritage’s 3 June 2011 sale. Sold for $3,750.

Exceptional Apollo 1 crew signed photo, with signatures from entire primary and first backup crew: ”Gus Grissom”, ”Ed White”, ”Roger B. Chaffee”, ”James A. McDivitt”, ”Rusty Schweickart” and ”Dave Scott” in red and black felt tip. Image captures the Apollo 1 astronauts posing in front of a model of the Command Module in their official NASA blue jump suits. Glossy photo measures 10” x 8”. Faint paperclip impression at upper right and fading to photo, while signatures remain bold and very readable. Overall in very good plus condition. With a Steve Zarelli COA for all six signatures. Sold for $10,000.

Apollo 1 Signed 8” x 10” Photo by Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee

Photo signed by the three Apollo 1 astronauts, ”Ed White”, ”Gus Grissom” and ”Roger Chaffee”. All three men would die in the fire on 27 January 1967 shortly before the mission was to launch. Glossy photo measures 8” x 10”, showing them standing in front of the Command Module. A few shallow creases and light fading to photo, otherwise near fine with bold signatures in black felt tip. From the estate of Daniel Lawrence, Sr., part of the Apollo 1 simulation team. Sold for $5,000.

Light soiling to lower right corner and light buckling. Near fine. With PSA/DNA COA for all signatures. Sold for $4,500.

Large signed color photo of the astronauts chosen by NASA in October 1963, representing the third group of space explorers. Includes ultra rare signatures of Charlie Bassett and Clifton Williams; all 14 astronauts sign with the exception of Theodore Freeman. 14” x 11” photo shows the astronauts seated and standing at a table, signed in black ink and felt tip: Michael Collins, Walter Cunningham, Donn Eisele, Dick Gordon, Rusty Schweickart, Dave Scott, Clifton Williams, Buzz Aldrin, Bill Anders, Charlie Bassett, Alan Bean, Gene Cernan and Roger Chaffee.
