Henry Robertson Bowers Autograph Sold

Henry Robertson Bowers was a lieutenant in the Royal Indian Navy who was selected among the best to join explorer Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition / British Antarctic Expedition. The expedition had scientific goals as well to be the first team to reach the South Pole, but Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen’s team beat them by 5 weeks. Scott’s final group of five to make the last stretch to the pole tragically perished as they attempted to return to their base camp at Cape Evans. Scott was a very methodical planner, however the temperatures encountered on the return to base camp were extreme and unforeseeable. The Bowers Mountains in Antarctica were named in honor of Henry Robertson Bowers.

We had the honor of auctioning a letter with a Henry Robertson autograph. Details are below.

Rare Henry Robertson “Birdie” Bowers 1907 Autograph Letter Signed Running 10 Pages — Bowers Died With Scott in Antarctica — “…My next letter will be from Paris I hope…”. Sold for $2,513.

Henry Robertson Bowers autograph letter signed to his mother as a Royal Indian Marines Serviceman. A member of the Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica under Robert Falcon Scott, he perished just a few years after this letter was written. Dated 26 October 1907 on R.I.M.S. Sladen letterhead, his 10pp. letter reads in part, “…My next letter will be from Paris, I hope…I ought to get my leave in April ’09…still one NEVER knows…I mean to try to see the Great Pyramid on the way home…” He signs, “Henry”. The only member of the Scott expedition without polar experience, Bowers was a member of the shore party and died of starvation and hypothermia in the tent with Scott in November 1912. Before his own death, Scott wrote Bowers’ mother praising his strength of character. Measures 5″ x 8″. Creasing, else near fine.
