Francis Lewis Autograph Sold at Auction

Francis Lewis is one of the 56 individuals to sign the Declaration of Independence as well as one of the signers of the Articles of Confederation. During his involvement in politics he was a founding member of the Sons of Liberty, an organization that fought for the protection of the colonies from the British Empire. Lewis had settled in Queens, New York and that region has honored him in several forms. Two public schools and a boulevard in Queens bear his name.

Autograph document signed by DOI signer Francis Lewis, 1772. Reads: “Received 5 August 1772 of Wm Thomas at Gardener thirty pounds on account. Fran. Lewis & Son.” Signed clearly in black ink. Excellent condition. Lewis, a wealthy NY businessman, joined the Revolutionary movement when he attended the Stamp Act Congress. In the Continental Congress, Lewis was instructed not to vote for independence, but signed the Declaration anyway. The British destroyed his home and his wife died after being imprisoned. He soon abandoned politics. Sold for $6,463.

Declaration of Independence Signer Francis Lewis Autograph Document Signed 1772 — Excellent Rare, Early Signature of New York Patriot and Member of Continental Congress

Autograph document signed by Declaration of Independence Signer Francis Lewis, New York patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence dated 5 August 1772. Lewis, Welsh by birth, became active in politics when he emigrated to New York. As a New York representative to the Second Continental Congress, Lewis signed the Declaration of Independence and also signed the Articles of Confederation, the first working constitution for the new nation. His loyalty to the American cause cost him his home, which was destroyed by the British. His wife was imprisoned for a time and may have died prematurely as a result. In this document, Lewis acknowledges receiving 30 pounds and 11 pence from “Wm. Thomas — Gardener”. He signs: “Fran. Lewis & Son”. Receipt is laid down to a card measuring 6.75″ x 1.75″. Minor paper loss and toning not affecting signature, else very good condition. One of the rarest and increasingly difficult Declaration Signers to obtain. Sold for $5,500.
