The ten volume account Abraham: Lincoln A History was authored by Lincoln’s personal secretaries, John Nicolay and John Hay during his presidency, and is one of the first detailed and thorough accounts of Lincoln’s life. Nicolay and Hay received Lincoln’s blessing to compose a biography while he was in office and as his secretaries were able to pull material from personal letters, journal entries and personal experiences.

Important Set of Books on President Lincoln — Ten Volume “History” by Lincoln’s Secretaries John Hay & John Nicolay
“Abraham Lincoln: A History” by John G. Nicolay and John Hay. The Century Company: New York: 1890 first edition set. These ten hardcover volumes are in unusually good condition in their original pine green bindings, with gilt lettering and top edges gilt. Volumes are illustrated with Mathew Brady photographs and over 300 wood-engraved images by the foremost engravers of the 19th century including Timothy Cole. Some light shelf wear, but overall in very good to near fine condition. A very attractive set for a library. Sold for $1,500.

JFK signs the front free endpaper, ”To Alfred Eisenstaedt / with every good wish / John Kennedy”. New York: Harper & Bros., 1956. Measures 6” x 8.5”. Housed in original unclipped dust jacket, showing price of $3.50. In very good condition with chipping to top edge of jacket. Light wear to book, otherwise near fine. From Alfred Eisenstaedt’s estate and with University Archives COA. Sold for $5,500.
John Adams 1798 ”State of the Union” Address — Very Rare Booklet Entitled ”Message to Congress”
John Adams ”Message of the President of the United States to BOTH HOUSES of CONGRESS,” dated 4 May 1798, signed by then Governor of Connecticut John Treadwell. The document relays an issue with U.S. envoys and the French government, ”…the unfeigned wish of the United States to restore harmony between the Republics [U.S. & France]…” The 21st Governor of Connecticut signs his copy ”J. Treadwell”. 72pp. booklet measures 4.5” x 7.5”. Very good condition with toning throughout and some chipping and soiling on the front and back page. Sold for $3,493.
Winston Churchill Signed Book, ”My Early Life, A Roving Commission”
Winston Churchill book signed, ”My Early Life, A Roving Commission”, published by Odhams Press Limited: London: 1957. First edition, second impression. Churchill’s autobiography, with a focus on his role in the Second Boer War, bears the Prime Minister’s autograph inscription to the fly-leaf, ”To Stanley James Webb / from / Winston S. Churchill / Dec 23. 1930.” Bound in red cloth boards with gilt lettering. Measures 6” x 9” and runs 392pp. Pencil notation to front pastedown, sunning to backstrip, cocking to spine and foxing to leaves and edges. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $2,500.
