Carl Jung Autograph Letter Signed on Dreams, Religion and “otherness” — “…We are living in a highly historic moment…the dogma of Mary’s assumption into heaven, which deifies the feminine…”

Unpublished Carl Jung autograph letter signed, with exceptional content on religion, dream analysis of the afterlife, and a sense of “otherness” that Jung writes he had been living with for 40 years. Dated 3 September 1950 from Bollingen. Ct. St. Gallen in Switzerland, Jung writes on his personal letterhead to his mentee, the psychoanalyst Dr. Rivkah Scharf Kluger. Scharf had recently moved to Jerusalem, prompting Jung to perhaps take a subtle dig at the teachings of his former mentor, Sigmund Freud, by writing, “Not only did you travel to a different country, you also travelled into a different time, namely into a realm of psychology that you have outgrown.” Letter in German translates in full:

“Dear Miss! / Your letter crossed with the one that I sent to the Givat-Brenner address. I hope you received it.
Ascona is now behind me, and I am slowly recovering from all the attendant noise and drama. I am very glad to have heard from you. I have often wondered how you might be doing. I never, not even for a moment, doubted that taking this road was the correct decision for you, but I do not underestimate the complexities it involves either. Not only did you travel to a different country, you also travelled into a different time, namely into a realm of psychology that you have outgrown.”

Jung then comments upon the recent dogma declaration by Pius XII of the Assumption of Mary: “We are living in a highly historic moment, witnessing the coincidence of the Quaternity and synchronicity with the solemn declaration of the dogma of Mary’s assumption into heaven, which deifies the feminine principle and thus transforms the Trinity into the Quaternity. In your present surroundings you now experience the same otherness that I have known for 40 years: one is aware of the unseen and is living within a spiritual future that is still concealed to the world of today.

Neumann’s presentation at Eranos was the best by far. Scholem was very good as well, and so was Corbin. Everything else fell away by comparison. I stayed there from Monday until Saturday. Many people were there, and it was hot to boot, at least during the last days. Van der Leeuw was alarmingly bad.

About your dream! We know so little about what comes after life that interpreting these kinds of dreams is almost impossible. If we were at all permitted to apply psychology to it, we would have to say that, right from the beginning, the transition out of the body is perceived as a tremendous relief. It may well be the experience of a ‘higher’ state, thus the glorification. This is followed by a reckoning with the quintessence of the earthly experience, resp. its examination of the new experience, i.e., the new state of expanded consciousness. This might easily explain the suffering.

The events of the dream have an inverse counterpart within your present situation. Your conscious mind is in a state of heightened experience, and it must deal with a surrounding of limited consciousness, which is not easy for the unconscious mind – or – the desire to remain within you (= mother) either. Thus, presumably, your dream represents a synchronicity. Without a doubt, the dream points to the real mother and her transcendental state. / I wish you all the best and every success! / Faithfully yours, / C.G. Jung.”

Lengthy two-page letter on a single sheet measures 8.25″ x 11.625″. Accompanied by Jung’s personal mailing envelope, handwritten by Jung. Scotch tape repair to split along lower fold, else near fine condition with bold handwriting. Sold for $4,463.

Carl Jung Autograph Letter Signed with Fantastic Content on the Ego, Dreams, Religion, Judaism & Morality — ”…What lies behind the ego, that is, the personal or subjective shadow…”

Perhaps the best Carl Jung autograph letter signed we’ve encountered, with outstanding content regarding the ego and its shadow, religion and morality, and reflection upon his own dark period, which ”even put my life at risk”. Jung writes to his mentee, Dr. Rivkah Scharf Kluger, on 17 December 1947, first touching upon dream analysis from which he expounds on numerous subjects. Composed on Jung’s personal letterhead, letter translates from German in full:

”Dear Miss! / I was not able to reply to your letter at home. I will have a little more time here, although I mainly must use it to rest. That is necessary. Yesterday I was completely worn out.

You still tend to interpret your dreams too subjectively, i.e., in a personalistic way. The dream relates to what is happening within your historic personality and not to your present ego. It only witnesses it. What lies behind the ego, that is, the personal or subjective shadow, another part of your ego, actually extends back through the millennia as a historic personhood. Right now it is learning the lessons of the first Christian centuries, a time when the most radical attempt in world history, to absolutely and quasi definitively separate good from evil, was made. At that time, women were being mauled in the arena by wild animals. During the most recent persecution of the Jews, they also were killed by the wild huntsman’s (Wotan’s) dogs (= wolves), but this was not a personal experience for you either. – It is not at all possible to attempt the integration of the shadow, i.e., the dark, and its opposite function without reawakening the horrible struggles of the past. This manifests as a subtle internal suffering within the soul that I know well and from which I almost perished. Your ego is too impatient. It strives too urgently to quickly get to the future. It will have to understand that every step forward will trigger almost unbearable suffering within the historic soul. The more slowly and patiently you proceed, the easier it will be, because then you will slowly and gradually accustom the shadow to the present. The Germans wanted to go forward too quickly and on a nationalistic path, and because of their unrecognized inner pain they turned into diabolic tormentors. Give thanks to the heavens every single day that you have access to certain guidance and enlightening insight within the horrible darkness of this problem. I was forced to stumble through the darkness without a path or footbridge and even put my life at risk.

At the end of the Piscean age, the whole Christian structure will have to be demolished again, carefully, so that nothing is lost but allowing it to be rebuilt with the inclusion of the other, darker part. We are right in the middle of this labor. / Best wishes and greetings, / Your faithful / C.G. Jung.”

Two page letter on a single sheet measures 8.25” x 11.625”. Folds and minor discoloration in a few spots, overall in near fine condition. Accompanied by original mailing envelope in Jung’s hand, postmarked from Bollingen, Switzerland on 18 December 1947. Sold for $4,000.

Carl Jung Autograph Letter Signed — “…the daemon is endless and it is never satisfied…”

Fascinating autograph letter signed by Carl Jung, composed to his mentee, psychoanalyst Dr. Rivkah Scharf Kluger, who at the time of this letter was helping Jung with his book “Psychology and Alchemy”. In this letter, Jung frequently references the “daemon” and its insatiable appetite, in response to a “wish” posed by Dr. Scharf. Jung tells her that he can’t grant her wish even though he would like to, as it would temporarily alleviate her suffering. Lot also includes a letter written by Dr. Scharf in response, thanking him for his empathy.

Dated 13 April 1942 from Bollingen, Switzerland, Jung writes in full, translated from German:

“Dear Miss! / I was not able to reply to you immediately; I still had to await a second letter. In principle, it is quite correct that you are approaching me with your wish. The request as such is correct in terms of its content as well, but it cannot be realized under the given circumstances. You must know, however, that expressing this wish, which in itself necessarily must go beyond the conventional limits, will awaken the daemon. The daemon is the absolute wanting-to-have-it-this-way and hideous suffering from the impossibility of fulfillment. Hence, since one would like to spare you this suffering, one feels under constant pressure to grant your wishes. However, the daemon is endless and it is never satisfied. You alone will have to voluntarily throw yourself to him every time. Nothing else will satisfy him. He must see that by destroying you he will destroy himself. And you will have to make this plain to him.

Miss von Franz is being presented as a ‘good connection,’ because she is not insatiable. Knowing that you are suffering so much is difficult for me, but I cannot help it. Besides, I know that this amount of suffering is necessary to make you as hard as you need to be in your life. / Kind regards, / Your devoted / C.G. Jung”.

Composed in black fountain pen, two-page letter on a single sheet measures 7″ x 8.75″. Folds, else near fine. Accompanied by original mailing envelope in Jung’s hand, addressed to philosophy candidate “R. Scharf”. Sold for $2,940.

Dr. Carl Jung Letter Autograph Bible Passage Signed

[handwritten in pencil on paper torn from a block:]
Isaiah IX,1
The people that walk in darkness shall see a great light, they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death
[night of death], light shall shine upon them.*
[handwritten in ink:]
Best regards,
Your CG. Jung”

Dated October 24 (no year)

[translator’s note:]
*Jung’s version of the verse uses the present tense, but it implies the future.
Most English language versions of the verse use “shadow of death,” although Jung writes “Todesnacht,”
“night of death.” He also uses “sitzen, = sit” rather than “wohnen = dwell,” a literal translation of the
Hebrew term for “sit,” which, however, is expanded to also mean “dwell, inhabit”. I was not able to find
out how the verse is worded in the Swiss reformed bible Jung would have used. Sold for $1,365.

First, you can never please all people, and secondly, I in particular cannot do that, and thirdly, all interviews are bad things because the interviewer does not understand any more than he is able to. However, I believe that it would be better, after all, to refuse all such interviews in future, even though I am sure that there are yet many more people like your ambulance station officer. / Thank you very much for the Leviathan text!
