Poignant Rachel Jackson autograph letter signed, dated 19 October 1818 from Hermitage, President Andrew Jackson’s estate in Nashville. Letter is addressed to her 19-year-old nephew, Andrew Jackson Donelson at West Point, who was raised by Rachel and Andrew Jackson after his father died when he was a small child. Donelson graduated from West Point in 1820 and went on to serve as his uncle’s aide-de-camp during the Seminole campaign. Here, Jackson imparts tragic news of the death of her brother a day earlier, mentions Andrew Jackson, and offers religious advice as “a Second Mother” to her nephew. Reads in part, “…I feel so much interest for your welfare in every situation of your jurney through this varigated Life. My Dear young Friend think not that I flatter you whe[n] I tell you how gratifying it is to me that in all your Deportment thus far you meet our highest Expectations…O Andrew Death has made an other Demand I hav Lost an other favourite Brother your uncle Severn Donelson on Earth He will be known no more for ever he has finally bid Dieu to all on Eath he died with the Dropsey in the Chest —  has left Seven Small Children…In less than three years we have Lost three relations…as far as I know your Uncle Jackson has been from home going on five weeks I hope he will be at home next week Permit me Andrew as a Mother to drop you a few hints…Aunt Rachel Donelson. [To] A.J. Donelson,” with signature continuing onto lower edge of blank integral leaf. Letter, on 2pp. measures 7.75″ x 9.75″, with integral leaf addressed by Jackson to her nephew and noted by Donelson, “Received November 1st 1818” with partial postmark. Folds throughout with small holes from folding, though expertly repaired. Very good condition overall. Sold for $4,070.
