19th Century Russian Novelist Ivan Turgenev Autograph Letter Signed — Praising Gogol’s Story ”The Old World Landowners”: ”…I cannot help but regret that I am not its author…”
Autograph letter signed by Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev, considered one of the great novelists and short story writers of the 19th century. A rare letter by the author, Turgenev writes to French socialite Valentine Delessert, praising fellow Russian author Nikolai Gogol’s story ”The Old World Landowners”, and also referring to his upcoming novel ”Smoke”. Dated 19 February 1866 from Baden, Germany, letter in French reads in full,
”Dear Madam, I should have responded to your last letter a long time ago, but I was holding off until I could do so face to face: you are aware that I intended to go to Paris in the middle of this month; my daughter and I were supposed to meet there. Unfortunately, I have suffered inflammation in the thumb muscle on my left hand, which has suddenly taken a nasty turn: for fifteen days now I have not left home and change my cold-water compresses every 10 minutes. It is going better now, although I cannot use my hand yet; it would appear that these afflictions are slow to heal, and my doctor advises me to have patience. I am trying to follow his prescription.
This pushes my trip to Paris back to the spring – and that is what is most unpleasant about the whole thing. I am very happy to hear that you are doing well; my daughter, who has benefited immeasurably from your kindness, shared your news with me. I hope that it will not be too long before I have the pleasure of entering that charming little parlor on rue Basse where it is so nice in every way.
I also recommend, and quite insistently, that you read the short story that Countess Adlerberg told you about – and I would add that it is a masterpiece of its genre. Unfortunately for me, it is not my creation; it is Gogol’s, and can be found in a volume of his short stories published by Hachette. Its title is ‘The Old World Landowners.’ As I just said, I cannot help but regret that I am not its author, I regret it greatly for myself – and a bit for the countess, who is, I believe, somewhat stronger in music than in literature, which does not prevent her from being a charming woman.
As I know you would like to inquire about my literary work, I can tell you that I had made some good progress on my novel [”Smoke”] when this unpleasant incident came along to chill my passion… (Chill is exactly the word, since there is ice water involved.) However, I have not lost hope that I will be able to pick up the thread of my interrupted narrative.
In the meantime, I ask that you mention me to all of yours and accept this assurance of my sincere and devoted affection. / I. Turgenev”. Four page letter on blue lined bifolium stationery measures 5” x 8” as folded. Light wear and folds, overall in very good plus condition with excellent legibility. With full translation. Sold for $4,063.
At Nate D. Sanders Auctions we sold the following writer’s autograph:
Incredible F. Scott Fitzgerald Typed Letter Signed on His Top 3 Influences as a Writer
Rare F. Scott Fitzgerald typed letter signed, devoted entirely to Fitzgerald’s revealing the people who impacted his writing. Dated 7 January 1934, in the final years of his life, letter to a Mr. Egbert S. Oliver at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon reads in part, ”Dear Mr. Oliver, The first help I ever had in writing in my life was from my father who read an utterly imitative Sherlock Holmes story of mine and pretended to like it. But after that I received the most invaluable aid from Mr. C.N.B. Wheeler then headmaster of the St. Paul Academy now the St. Paul Country Day School in St. Paul, Minnesota. 2. From Mr. Hume, then co-headmaster of the Newman School and now headmaster of the Canterbury School. 3. From Courtland Van Winkle in freshman year at Princeton – now professor of literature at Yale (he gave us the book of Job to read and I don’t think any of our preceptorial group ever quite recovered from it.) After that comes a lapse. Most of the professors seemed to me old and uninspired, or perhaps it was just that I was getting under way in my own field. I think this answers your question. This is also my permission to make full use of it with or without my name. Sorry I am unable from circumstances of time and pressure to go into it further. Sincerely, [signed] F. Scott Fitzgerald”. Fitzgerald added a few hand corrections in ink throughout the letter. 2pp. letter on 2 sheets of plain stationery, measuring 8.5” x 11” are quite attractively matted and framed alongside a photo of Fitzgerald to an overall size of 32” x 17.5”. Light toning, creasing and paperclip imprint to letter, else near fine. Sold for $13,045.
19th Century Russian Novelist Ivan Turgenev Autograph Letter Signed, Likely Referring to His Short Story ”King Lear of the Steppes” — ”…I have…completed a microscopically small story…”
Autograph letter signed by Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev, considered one of the great novelists and short story writers of the 19th century. A rare letter by the author, Turgenev writes to French socialite Valentine Delessert, referring to his upcoming short story, likely ”King Lear of the Steppes”, published in 1870. Dated 12 October 1869 from Baden, Germany, letter in French reads in full,
”Dear Madam, It has been quite a while since I have written to you – and I have often greatly reproached myself for it; I have to add, to excuse myself somewhat, that I have received news of you regularly, first from my daughter, then later from Mr. Merimee. Nonetheless I would be happy to hear directly from you how you have been this summer – and what you are doing now. I intend to come to Paris in the first days of November – and I will see you; but write me a couple words between now and then. My health is once again good; I believe that I have something not entirely normal with my heart – but this is not serious – and it is not this that will keep me from living. I have not done much, besides; I definitely think that my productive vein is running out and drying up. I have, however, completed a microscopically small story – which I will probably submit to the Revue.
I have heard tell that Mrs. de Nadaillac is travelling with the Empress; she did not come to Baden this year. When you write to her, remind her of me. / Goodbye, dear Madam; I kiss your hands tenderly and ask that you trust in my unwavering affection. / I. Turgenev / P.S. The affairs of Paulinette and her husband are going very well, based on what she writes me; I tell this to you because I know that you have the kindness to take interest in what happens to her. / P.S.S. So what is the name of the road you live on presently?”. Two page letter on a single sheet measures 5.25” x 8.125”. Shallow folds, and light uniform toning, overall in near fine condition with elegant penmanship. With full translation. Sold for $2,875.
