Blondie Estate Auction, Part II — Over 150 Blondie Comic Strips From the Chic Young Estate to be Auctioned
Auction Also Includes a Prince Valiant Sunday Strip, Krazy Kat Sunday & Daily, a Buster Brown Sunday, + Dozens of Li’l Abner Strips
LOS ANGELES, June 3, 2016 – Due to popular demand, the Young family is making a second offering of never-before-released Blondie comic strips for auction on June 30, 2016. It should be noted that this offering includes the last batch of Blondie dailies that the family will release for the foreseeable future.
Hundreds of other comic strips are also available in the auction, including Prince Valiant by Hal Foster, Krazy Kat by George Herriman, Buster Brown by Richard Outcault, & hundreds of others by Frederick Opper, Al Capp, Milt Gross, Percy Crosby and Tad Dorgan. Interested bidders may participate in the auction online.
The Blondie strips begin in June, 1931 and include Day 14 of Dagwood’s Famous “Hunger Strike”, Mrs. Bumstead taking Dagwood on a cruise to get him away from Blondie, Blondie going to secretarial school, and Dagwood and Blondie trying to move into his parents’ large house after their honeymoon. It also includes the births of Baby Dumpling and Cookie, and Blondie starting her own catering business in 1991, which caused a media frenzy at the time and prompted Peter Jennings to name Blondie his “Person of the Week”.
In addition to the comic strips, some lots include preliminary pencil sketches by Chic Young, corresponding to the finished strip. The winning bidder of each lot will also receive a Blondie booklet inscribed by Dean Young. This booklet documents the genesis of the Blondie comics, and how the Bumstead family both represented and adapted to the American experience of the 20th century – through the Great Depression, post-war prosperity, and shifts in the cultural landscape.
Dean Young said of the comic strips: “My dad, Chic Young, was a genius! His talent for storytelling and artistic skills are still unmatched today. He once said that he found the magic formula for creating Blondie by simply restricting his premises to: eating, sleeping, going to work, and raising a family.
Chic set the bar of excellence at the highest level…it is still the level we strive to achieve in the modern Blondie comic strip of today. And today, the Blondie comic strip is one of the most popular comic strips in the world appearing in 2,300 newspapers all around the world. Blondie is translated into 35 different languages in 55 countries and read by an estimated 280,000,000 people every day.”
