Wimbledon Medal Auction

NateDSanders.com has been proud to have two Wimbledon medal auction events.  In the first, consigned directly from Arthur Ashe’s widow, was Arthur Ashe’s 1971 Wimbledon Medal that sold for over $20,000.  We also had another Wimbledon Medal auction and this one was from the 19th Century — for Harold Mahony’s win in 1896.  Please see below:

Arthur Ashe’s 1971 Wimbledon Medal Auction — For Men’s Doubles Runners-Up With Partner R.D. Ralston

Arthur Ashe’s Wimbledon medal from 1971. Medal honors Ashe’s 2nd place finish with R.D. Ralston in Men’s Doubles. Lettering around the outside reads, ”THE LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS” and surrounds engraved print reading, ”MENS DOUBLES / Runners-up / A.R. ASHE / and / R.D. RALSTON / 1971.” Silver medal bears an F & S maker’s mark, that of British jeweler Fattorini & Sons. Reverse features a figural relief design of Athena, here personifying the virtues of athletic competition. In her left hand she balances a tiny figure of victory goddess Nike, while her right hand crowns the Lawn Tennis globe icon with a laurel sprig. Medal measures 1.5” in diameter. Discoloration to figural side and tarnishing to engraved side, else near fine. Housed in its original red leather 2.5” x 3.5” hinged case with red velvet lining, in good condition. An impressive memento from Ashe as an up-and-coming Wimbledon contender. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe’s widow.  Sold for $21,013.

 

Wimbledon Medal Auction of Championship Gold Won by Early Tennis Great Harold Mahony in 1896

Harold Mahony’s gold medal from Wimbledon 1896. Medal represents the apex of Mahony’s legendary tennis career, triumphing over Wilfred Baddeley for the gold. Mahony was also an Olympic silver medalist and part of the first winning team for the British Isles at the Davis Cup 1903 before his untimely death in a bicycle accident at age 38. Gold medal features a pair of crossed rackets to obverse, with a tudor rose positioned underneath, surrounded by, “All England Club / Wimbledon”. To reverse is engraved at center, “1896 / Mr. H.S Mahony”, flanked by laurel sprigs and surrounded by the title, “Lawn Tennis Champion”. 18kt gold medal bears the maker’s name of Henry Soane, London. Measures 1.5″ in diameter. Weighs just over 1 ounce or 31 grams. Faint scratching, else near fine.
