Marc Chagall Signed Book

A Marc Chagall signed book can be just as expensive as a book signed by Thomas Jefferson.  Sometimes, a Marc Chagall signed book will only be in an edition of 20, obviously, making it very rare.  Thus, the Marc Chagall signed book example of “The Story of Exodus,” Leon Amiel, Paris and New York, 1966.

We have sold a Marc Chagall signed book twice and here are their results.  Note the huge prices:

A very rare Marc Chagall signed book.  Paris/NY: Leon Amiel, 1966, from the total edition of 285 copies, this is number 19 of 20 printed on Japon Nacr handmade paper, with the first lithograph signed by Chagall. The text from The Story of Exodus in English is illustrated with 24 full-page original color lithographs by Chagall, one of them double-page; signed by the artist in pencil on the justification page. Loose leaves in publisher’s wrappers and canvas over boards folding box; overall size 21×15.75″. Some text pages and lithos with very minor handling creases (as is usual for the very fragile Japan paper), not affecting images; no foxing, no tears; all  lithos very bright and fresh colors. The regular edition was on Arches paper, with none of the lithos signed. This copy is inscribed and dated (1967) by the publisher Leon Amiel to another prominent French publisher and art dealer Pierre Bordas on the bottom of the title page. Provenance for this copy: Pierre Bordas (Paris) and Sotheby’s (London). One of the very best illustrated books by Chagall, his masterpiece, here in its exceptionally rare deluxe edition. Likely very few copies presently exist in the complete state.  A very rare Marc Chagall signed book.  Sold for $65,000.

Images are the same as ones from this Marc Chagall signed book link, where they only obtained $40,000 — http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/marc-chagall-the-story-of-exodus-leon-5488965-details.aspx/.

Dated 1979 to the lower left. The drawing’s stark black birds alighting in the tree provide a quintessential example of Chagall’s use of color to create movement in a piece.
