Bill Wilson Signed & Inscribed Alcoholics Anonymous First Edition, First Printing of the Big Book — With PSA/DNA COA

Very rare Bill Wilson Alcoholics Anonymous first edition, first printing of his immensely influential book “Alcoholics Anonymous,” Works Publishing Company: New York: 1939. The co-founder of the addiction treatment organization inscribes the front pastedown to his friends Dr. and Mrs. Forrist V. Haley, in full: “My Dear Friends / Dr & Myrle Haley / Whose devotion has / meant so much to / so many – / As Ever / Bill Wilson / 11/21/43″. All first printing points are present: Half-title page is followed by the title page and pages v-viii, with another half-title page before the text begins; complete text is followed by three blank leaves. 400pp. tome measures 6″ x 9.25”. Bound in deep red cloth boards with gilt lettering, housed in a matching slipcase. Ink notation by Haley appears on front free endpaper, requesting that the book be returned to him. A slip typed with the Serenity Prayer is affixed to the front pastedown above Wilson’s autograph. Another slip with typed Biblical verse is affixed to the top margin of p.71. Surface abrasion to “& Myrle” of inscription. Professional strengthening to boards, overall in very good condition. An important work of the 20th century signed by the author regarded as a hero to millions. A spectacular Alcoholics Anonymous first edition. With PSA/DNA COA.  Sold for $12,704.

Alcoholics Anonymous First Edition, First Printing — Inscribed and Signed by AA’s Co-Founder Bill Wilson

Alcoholics Anonymous first edition, first printing hardcover book, signed and inscribed by AA co-founder Bill Wilson on the front free endpaper. Works Publishing Inc: New York: 1939. Wilson inscribes this copy in blue ink, “To Fred – This in grateful memory of your friendship and of the old days! Affectionately / Bill / NY / Feb/20/51 [or 57]”. In original publisher’s red cloth boards with titles in gilt lettering. Housed in a complementing red cloth clamshell case with black leather labels titled in gilt. Book has some wear to boards, with a circular dampstain on spine. Minor toning and and wear to edges of interior pages. Impressive Alcoholics Anonymous first edition. Very good condition overall.  Sold for $12,141.08.

Alcoholics Anonymous first edition, first printing: “The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism.” Works Publishing Company: New York: 1939. In this ”Big Book” the founders of AA outline the organization’s successful twelve step treatment method in one of the best selling books of all time. In original publisher’s 6.25” x 9.25” red cloth boards with titles in gilt lettering. Book has some wear to boards, with minor soiling to page edges. Minor toning to interior pages and moderate separation from binding. Very good condition overall. Alcoholics Anonymous first edition in average condition. Sold for $6,544.

Alcoholics Anonymous First Edition, First Printing of the Revolutionary “Big Book” From Which the Substance Treatment Program Derives Its Name — One of Only About 1,900 in Existence

Alcoholics Anonymous first edition, first printing “The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered from Alcoholism”, Works Publishing: New York: 1939. This is one of just approximately 1,900 surviving from the scant 4,860 printed in April of 1939. All first printing points are present: Half-title page is followed by the title page and pages v-viii, with another half-title page before the text begins; complete text is followed by three blank leaves. Seminal book by “Bill W.” kindled AA as an organization, outlining the famous 12 steps to sobriety and helping the nascent group reach membership in the millions globally. Runs 400pp. and measures 6.25″ x 9.25″. Bound in crimson cloth boards with gilt lettering. Exterior shows rubbing to gilt lettering, light soiling to boards and rippling to bottom of front board. Interior shows separation to fly-leaf, toning and pencil notations to leaves, prior owner’s name to front pastedown and clipped front free endpaper beside “Property of” notation, a common practice done to honor anonymity of deceased owners of the book. In very good condition overall. With a reproduction dustjacket and a fine red cloth clam-shell slipcase with gilt lettering. One of the most important non-fiction works of the 20th century. Alcoholics Anonymous first edition in worn condition. Sold for $5,829.58.

Alcoholics Anonymous Co-Founder Bill Wilson Signed First Printing of ”The A.A. Way of Life”

First edition, first printing of ”The A.A. Way of Life” signed by founder Bill Wilson, published by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc.: New York: 1967. Wilson’s autograph inscription in blue ink to the front free endpaper reads in full, ”My dear Jane / For your inspiration to so many – and to me, my deep gratitude. NY Oct/67 / In affection / Bill”. Book, subtitled, ”Selected Writings of A.A.’s Co-Founder, A Reader by Bill” contains a different small anecdote or thought on each page. Runs 333pp. and measures 4.5 x 6.25”. Bound in steel blue faux-leather boards with original dustjacket. Previous owner’s name and address sticker affixed to front pastedown, cocking to spine and mild foxing to edges, else near fine. Dustjacket shows toning, wear to edges and some paper loss to corners, else near fine.  Sold for $1,563.
Signed copy of ”AA Today: A Special Publication by the AA Grapevine Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous” hardcover first edition, third printing. Cornwall Press: New York: 1960. Signed in blue ink by founder Bill Wilson on front fly leaf, ”Dear John — For your example of all that’s AA, my deep gratitude — Ever / Bill / NY / June ’64”. Runs 111pp. with various testimonials and photos running throughout. Measures 8.5” x 11”. Green cloth boards have fading from the sun and dampstaining in spots. Pages have minor toning and previous owner’s name written on front pastedown. Very good condition.  Sold for $1,540.
Signed photo of Alcoholics Anonymous founder, Bill Wilson AKA ”Bill W.” Wilson signs, ”Dear Jack, This with all affection / sincerely Bill” dated 14 March 1969. Time magazine named Wilson to their Time 100 List of The Most Important People of the 20th Century. This matte photo mounted to a board from a previous frame measures 7.75” x 10” with some chipping and wear. First part of inscription is difficult to read against the black background, but signature is clear. Overall in very good condition.
