Elvin Hayes, aka “The Big E” remains one of the most vivacious power forwards to ever play the game — his trademark turnaround jumper and aggressive defense helped him to break countless records with a culmination of his election to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1990.

Here’s a nice, lengthy interview with two superstar athletes — Michael Jordan interviewing Hayes

His persona both on and off the court was larger than life — outspoken and impassioned, he once said of himself,

“I’m very honest about myself,” Hayes said in an article in the Dallas Times Herald, “and that’s one reason I get in trouble. I speak what I feel. Other people are more diplomatic, but I don’t feel, by doing that, that I’m a man.”

Perhaps that sentiment was formed in childhood — he grew up in the small town of Rayville, Louisiana at a time when Southern racism was at its highest and civil rights were still being implemented.

During his college years, Hayes became the University of Houston’s first African American basketball player in 1966 along with Don Chaney — noting that his coaches were some of the first white people to treat him with dignity and respect — “They helped me overcome 18 years of hate,” he remembered in this article.
